Profanity in Churches Sponsoring AA

One helping another in a loving and caring manner? Our common welfare should come first ,personal recovery depends on A.A. unity. Our common welfare does come first but our individual welfare follows closely.Group conscience, business meetings etc are good places to start with concerns .WE DO NOT GOVERN. I know for me personally,if group autonomy of any group affected my recovery I would seek another group.I also try and never use any unspiritual language or cursing or swearing, especially in the same context with my Higher Power, whom I call God,but its not all about me.......I have been at many meetings where this was not the case. Unity is integral to the survival of our fellowship, not to say we will never disagree or have conflicts. If it aint spiritual its probably not practical overall. It is said WE work together as a group to ensure in a storm(I can feel you are in a storm)the ship does not sink and our members do not perish.Yes many Things have evolved since the early days ,I came in in '84 and sharing, and ideas were different BACK THEN THAN TODAY... I wish you peace and serenity in your journey,it seems as if you have been part of the fellowship for awhile.a fellowship that pursues one  helping another in a loving and caring manner, based on spiritual principles and guided by that Power greater than us.Our traditions are our guidelines that protect us from ourselves. They are the Unity.....Peace man.......WELCOME TO MIP a place of one helping another..smile

I have become totally disgusted by the profaning of God, the churches most meetings are held in, the newcomer and the divinely inspired program of AA. It wasn't like this when I first became a member in the 1970's. People still had respect and were responsible to the newcomer.
Since most members think it is funny when some self proclaimed spiritual and serene member is using God and the 'F' bomb in the same sentence I have an ultimatum. Address the problem in the meetings and if I don't see a change I will contact every Minister of the churches you are profaning as guests and have them address the issue for you.
I will no longer tolerate this behavior which does not reflect on recovery but turns people like newcomers and myself and many others away from the place we expect to not hear the language of the street, the bars and gutters.
Clean it up AA because this is no idle threat. I will not be forced away from the program that I love any longer because you are too wishy washy to clean up your act.
Sincerely
Charlz W.

Wow, ... in addition to welcome, I guess I want to say what have you been drinking, to make your very 1st post a threat to people you don't even know???

I must say, that's a poor start AND a poor method to carry the message AA has to offer ... Although, I do agree that less profanity in our meetings would be nice ... and when properly addressed, most of the groups I attend put the squeeze on those who insist on repeating profane sharing ...

Our motto is "Profanity is NOT a sign of spiritual growth." ... and maybe we should add, 'neither is threatening others who are here to recover from alcoholism' ...

I pray your attitude will change to respect of the people who have never used profanity in your presence ... you are preaching to a group here that you will likely never see in person ... and we have moderators here that insure that 'strong profanity' never stays on this board for long ...

Maybe you just need a long 'nap' ... please come back when you feel like sharing something a little more 'positive' ...

Good Day,
Pappy

Everyone is entitled to speak their mind here. I pretty much agree that profanity has no place in the rooms, and it's not really tolerated here, and people are pretty good about it. Welcome to the board Chariz.

Charlz, I can see why the issue would upset you. Hence, I grant you one good rant in good fath lol. Now...this falls generally into the column of stuff you have little to no power over. Hence, getting yourself that wound up is futile. The program also works by attraction. What would happen if in your meeting where this is going on you gently stated "Guys, this is just me but It bothers me to hear so much cursing in a church. Can we please show more respect of the space we are in." If stated that way, you might actually make a difference. If stated the way you did here in a tirade, everyone will laugh or dismiss you or think you are crazy and you will be the one who then has no meeting or program left to return to.

Easy does it. You have a very valid point but you need to consider your motives and the way you make the point in order to make any difference. Otherwise, it's just you being angry and having a resentment against a bunch of other people who don't care.

Hey Charlz,
Welcome aboard. Can you elaborate? I am probably the worst offender here on the board, and I do feel bad about it, but are you angry about a recent event at your own group?
Tom

I will admit that after dropping a "G.D. bomb" at a church housed A.A. meeting, I felt rather sheepish. I'm sympathetic to the topic of your post, and I believe your anger is indeed justified, but try to remember that A) people are a lot goofier now than they were in the 70s and B) to the bulk of them it's not a church but an A.A. meeting place, and tend to forget the observation of sanctities. It just slips their minds.
