I first joined this board in September 2004. This board probably saved my life.
I've worked the programme since then and never really been totally comfortable with the Higher power thing.
I've has 2 relapses in that time, one minor and one really bad one that lasted for 2-3 months and really got the message through to me that something had to be done.
AA works for many people, I'm not one of them.
4 months without a drink now and I've found that for me, forgetting about alcohol makes it easier to avoid wanting a drink. On the couple of occations when I've felt tempted, just looking at some old photos and reading the diary puts me off (and the Antabuse!).
I wish all of you success in getting off the drink, and STAYING off. One of the most important things I learned here is that it is the first one that is the problem!
To the people that know me... Thank YOU so much. Love you all.
To the people that don't know me, please don't regard this message as being anti-AA, different things work for different people. Give AA a go.
So goodbye for now,
See ya around in cyberspace!
Chris the Cabbagehead.

Chris, hey! How good to hear from you. Keep checking in with us, ok? I always liked what you have had to say, was just asking someone where you were a few days ago, missing your post these past few months. Your shares were good, so you take good care of Chris, a big hug, the other Chris

I believe that different folk have different recovery journeys. All that matters is that they are sober and happy. I'm always intrigued to find out what works for other people. AA works for me, but I'm not remotely judgemental about AA and other people.
Please let us know how it is going for you, won't you?
Take care,
Carol

hey chris, good to hear from ya, dont be a stranger! you helped me out of some tough ones, and if u found something that works for u thats what its all about!!!! wagon
I used to have hair that colour! Truly I did - way back when I was about 14 and had not yet discovered booze.
Chris - I don't know you, but I wish you all the best. Can't say I ever tried any other way to live sober. My emphatic surrender brought me directly to AA and here I have stayed. Heading on for four years now. I have seen people come and go. To be honest, the ones that go seem to drink and/or die (but even in the rooms they die - i have never been to so many damn funerals in my life as in the past few years in AA). However, I was reading some stats that show AAs long term (hahaha - they measure this as up to 12 months) sobriety record is absolutely abysmal, less than 10%. I dunno hey - seems to me that AA is not for every one. I am absolutely certain that AA has no monopoly on God and so I believe that if we want sobriety God can make it so, regardless of where we find Him. I don't see what you said as anti-AA - just as rigorous honesty. I struggled with the God thing in a big way but I just kept going, using all these sober people as the higher power that kept me sober and semi-sane.
