Alcohol used in cooking?

Hi guys & gals,

I have just got back from my Saturday morning AA meeting and feel set up for the weekend.

After the meeting, a few of us got chatting about using alcohol in cooking. To my amazement, one or two folk said that they still do that, but only if they know that it is fully cooked back. I couldn't/wouldn't do that. I didn't even think that alcohol, used in cooking, did have the alcohol element fully cooked off anyway. I am even so very careful about alcohol in, say, mouth wash or cough mixtures. I don't want any sort of alcohol in my system at any time. I'm even kinda paranoid about taking prescribed pain-killers these days.

Is it just me? I'm now curious about what other people think.

Take care and have a super and sober weekend,

Carol

Hi Carol. Regarding alcohol in cooking....... I'm happy to use it in something that needs to cook for a while such as red wine in a lasagne or whisky in a mustard sauce (that will then be baked on to a ham).

Personally I think the greatest danger is actually having alcohol in the house. What I do is buy small bottles of what I need for the food and let my wife finish it off (She's not an alcoholic). That way, I'm not tempted to drink the leftovers!

Hope you have a great day.

Best wishes

Chris.

I'll eat something that had alcohol cooked in it, like beer batter fish and chips. But when I make something and the recipe calls for wine or beer I just leave it out. I've chicken cacciatore and taste no differnce.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for coming back to me.

I, too, think that the greatest danger (well, for me anyway) would be to have alcohol in the house. I have been thinking about it and I guess that I have got a little over-obsessed with consuming any alcohol. But, I do want to get it right.

Take care and have a great weekend,

Carol

Hi Bob,

Thanks for that.

Until now, I have always used a stock instead of, say, wine in a recipe and make sure that the dish is well cooked. I have just chatted with a friend in AA and she was horrified at the thought of cooking with alcohol. She's been sober for over ten years. I guess that it is a very individual decision.

Take care and have a great weekend,

Carol

Hi zoomie,

Yup, I know what you mean about being afraid of liking it too much. Right now, I am still frightened of alcohol and that's a good thing for me. I don't want to get complacent and start to slip. I know that it would be so easy for me.

Have a great day,

Carol

Way back in the old days the first time I got sober,it was told to us not to anything unless ordered by the doctor.  I don't use anything at times even for a headache unless it's a real pounder, even then I just take the tylinol once and deal with it because I can become addicted to anything!  I know for me if I cooked with wine, I would not let the alcohol cook off all the way or hoping there would still be some left for me to catch a buzz LOL.  That's just me being I'm an alcoholic and I have not grown enough in the program nor will I ever to beable to have alcohol in my house without wanting to drink it.  I don't use mouthwash, just pop a piece of gum in my mouth if I want fresh breath.  I'm not afraid I'd drink mouth wash, but it is the simple fact it is made with alcohol that I don't use it.  Again everyone is differnt,so it's really up to you.
