I'm floating a question to those in the fellowship who might be in a position to assist and advise me. As I'm also brand new to this forum - please bear with while I try to explain. My younger bro. has been in and out of rehab for approx. 10 yrs. He resides in Edmonton, AB, Canada. I am (by the grace of god and one day at a time) sober for a little over 21 yrs. My home is just across the provincial border from Ottawa, Ont. - in Quebec province. What is the fastest and best way to get my Bro. - who just turned 60 into a clinic, hospital or rehab in the Canadian Province of Alberta; i.e. close to Edmonton, if possible.
Boston Blacky ...go to the white pages of your local telephone book and look up the hotline number for the AA central office and call that number. When you reach someone ask if they make "house calls" (where recovering AA will go out and talk to those in trouble) and then see how they and you can help. I've done several house calls with success. Anyhow get a hold of some recovering AAs who know what it is about and are willing to help. You can also go to "open" AA meetings and ask those in attendance. Good luck.
Hi Blacky, ... Does your brother ever mention that he 'wants' to get sober and follow in your foot steps??? ... has he ever asked for help??? ... he ever mention that he's sick and tired of be'n sick and tired??? ...
As you know, it's hard to get help for someone who doesn't want it or doesn't think they need it ...

Thanks to both Pappy and JerryF for their replies. I can tell you my dear Bro. "K" has a long history of slipping and because of geography; i.e. I'm in cental Canada while he's in the West - direct intervention is not possible, right now. As everyone knows the 'cunning and baffling" portion of our illness(es) is such that we can not predict what the end outcome will be once we take that first drink. Chronic illness and ultimate death surely awaits him unless help is found soon, I fear. There's someone with the proper connections in Northern Alberta, Canada - who knows someone or somewhere who might assist. Again, thanks for listening and your suggestions. bb
Hi BB, ... I realize there is much more go'n on behind the scene here than you have time to relate to us ... but the scenes are all too familiar ... If your brother has a family friend that he holds in 'high regard' and this person can sit with him and lay some facts out to him on the fatal nature of his actions, then maybe, just maybe, he be open to some logic and reasoning ...
All you can do is open the door and gently give him a push ... the rest is up to him ... just be sure to keep the light 'on' for him ...
I'll keep you both in my prayers ...

That's great news ... I pray he continues to improve and will be open to the aid he can find in the meeting rooms ... if he can see others can stay sober and learn to enjoy life, then maybe that will increase his desire to follow suit ...

Good news. Bro. Keith is still in detox; i.e. for another few weeks - if not longer. Also on the plus side; latest word is him'll be allowed to stay a half-way facility instead of returning directly to his home. His past attempts at detox and staying sober (for several months) failed - I believe, due in part to him feeling too good, too fast. If you know what I mean. Thanks again to all for your on-going advise and assistance. bb
More good news. Bro. K. is out of detox and on the road to recovery at a halr-way facility. Spoke to him several days ago and he's still adjusting to his new digs where they are approx. 60 total in recovery. Residents are allowed to remain there for upto 12 months. One day at a time - and by the Grace of God he will get and stay well. I read page 449/450 of AA BB and know acceptance is the key. Have a great 24 hrs. and God Bless. bb
