My friend is facing charges because of his alcohol addiction

Hi ,

I am here to share my friend's story, and to get some advice. My friend, David, he is an alcoholic. He was in a relationship with a girl for some months. Things were going smooth, of course, there was his drinking problem on one side, but other than that, as to what we could see, he was in a good relationship with his girlfriend. But, now she has filed a suit against him for sexual and domestic assault. That is when things came into view. David was very rude to her, and he used to force her for her sex, and even hurts her physically. She has recordings of it, and now my friend is facing criminal charges. We have approached a criminal defense lawyer for representing him in the court. But, he is still so addicted to alcohol. I know him very well, and I am sure he was doing all this under the influence of alcohol, so he has to stop this first. That is what even our lawyers recommended. I can't lose my friend, I want him back, so I want to help him stop this habit. I have been looking for ways for this. Should I take him to a de addiction center? Or what else can I do so that he gets back to normal? Can you share your stories on how you overcame this problem? Please help me. I am desperately looking for some advice.

Hi Betty, you can't do anything to get your friend "back to normal". I would think at this point, maybe he would be motivated to go to AA meetings ASAP. An alcoholic has to want to get better himself, sometimes something this serious happening to him will make him understand that he needs to get himself help right away so he can deal with his legal problems. You seem like a good friend to him, maybe you could look up local AA meeting for him and suggest that he start going. Good luck.

Unfortunately, some people need to face legal repercussions to realize their life has become unmanageable. Some of my first AA meetings were in jail.
