Hi all, is this the right board to introduce myself on?
I am a 35year old female living in the UK and have finally, finally promised myself I would get some support. I am a binge drinker and have been since 13. Unfortunately I have not learned how to control this despite some awful experiences and many many days lost due to illness, shame, anxiety...
So after coming to yesterday morning, after another pointless, mindless session. I am making changes, lots of them. I seem to have a determination I have not had before. So hopefully this is my time, so I guess I am 2 days sober? ...
Welcome to the site and congratulations on your decision and your two days sober. When I made that decision....The first thing I had to do was find out if I was the kind of drinker that belonged in AA. I was certainly hoping I wasn't. I didn't know anything about alcoholism...But I had a pretty good idea I had it. I know I wasn't a normal drinker.
The book Alcoholics Anonymous...often called the Big Book....describes the different kind of drinkers...And gives a decription of the real alcoholic... The type that the program of AA works best for. This description is contained in The Doctor's Opinion and Chapters 1, 2 and 3.
They start Chapter 4 like this....
In the preceding chapters you have learned something of alcoholism. We hope we have made clear the distinction between the alcoholic and the nonalcoholic. If, when you honestly want to, you find you cannot quit entirely, or if when drinking, you have little control over the amount you take, you are probably alcoholic. If that be the case, you may be suffering from an illness which only a spiritual experience will conquer.

You can make your own decision if AA is right for you....It didn't leave me with any doubts. I'd recommend face to face meetings....I had to be willing to do some things I wasn't real crazy about doing...I was scared to death of it....To tell you the truth. But it was the right thing to do....Once I was around these people that suffered what I suffered and had found a way out....I knew I was in the right place. And it's worked for me for a little over three years. It gave me a new life. Here is the book online if you are interested.
Sounds like you're definitely 'one of us' ... Very few of us make it to a sober life, fact is, less than 10% that make the conviction you expressed above ... MOST of us that have made it, carry this conviction to get and stay sober, with us to the rooms of AA ... there, we learn there IS a solution to our situation AND it becomes much more than that, it becomes a very fulfilling way to live life ... a miracle in fact ...
You will soon know that your decision to change the way your living will become the most important decision you've ever made in your lifetime ... ... ... I think most everyone on the board will agree with me ... we have been plucked from a certain horrible death to live a life now filled with gratification and a desire to help others ... what could possibly be better than that ??? ...
Bless you for taking the action needed to make your life better than you can even imagine possible right now ... we need you ...
Love ya and God Bless, Pappy

Hi loopy, welcome to AA forums. If you want to quit drinking you can join in the program anytime. Like the others said, there are meetings online, in person and there are these boards as well. If you've finally had enough and you want to quit, this is a great program. I am living a much better life today than in the past with alcohol and all the troubles it brought to my life. BoozeWar
