Do Dropped Charges Stay on Your Permanent Record

Okay...just curious. Right now I work for myself. I have a sob for a boss and the pay is lousy, however, I get sick leave, vacation days and a flexible schedule doing something I love so I haven't been very motivated to change jobs....

Several years ago I got a DUI, completed the required classes, got my certificate of completion. Hey, and one day I may even drive again if I can get enough nerve to take that road test which I have to do, as well as the written one and I pass both. I guess it also would help it I had a car. I signed my car title over to my bf because he paid for some repairs on it and I felt guilty about that.

A couple of years after that, still a drunk, I got into a catfight with my bf. (We had gotten into many many physical altercations before and I never reported him although I could have as I did get hurt sometimes.) He called 911 because he had a deep scratch--more like a cut--on his arm which he couldn't even recall when it happened as we were going at it and it all happened so fast. I was shocked when he called because I didn't even know how I managed to hurt him. (That is the God's honest truth.)  I got arrested again. Because we agreed to go to counseling and he couldn't remember how I hurt him the charges were dismissed--or dropped, I am not sure of the word they used.

I was wondering if anyone knows if this will stay on my record. I am thinking about how this will affect me getting a job, an apartment, etc. My credit is already shot (another "wonderful" result of my drinking and having a jerk for a boss) and I am a bit down because I feel like I have painted myself into a corner and don't know what to do to get out of it. I'm kind of embarrassed to post all this, however, have learned since being in AA that everybody's heard everything before and it is what it is.

Thanks so much.

BTY

Job applications ask if you have been convicted most of the time....not charged. I don't recall them asking if I was ever arrested either....they just ask about convictions. Yes, some of this stuff is on your record, but that doesn't necessarily prohibit you from jobs. My former upstairs neighbor called the police on me because he thought I was running my ceiling fan too loud on purpose to keep him awake. When I went to get a local police report, the history of them responding and coming out for that was on there. It didn't stop me from getting a job that required a high level of clearance. I was so mad though. Ready to find that old neighbor and give him a real reason to call police (joking---mostly). In retrospect though, he should have called police on us for other stuff and we were crappy drunk neighbors....but the ceiling fan!?

Wow pinkchip that's a new one on me...I wonder why the police even responded to such an absurd call. Guess they either have to respond to every call no matter how ridiculous or maybe they were having a light night.
I understand about being a "crappy drunk neighbor" as I was one of those types of neighbors myself. Now I have to listen to the neighbors I have be that way and it has made me realize how insensitive I was.

LMAO PC, ... a properly installed 'ceiling fan' is one of the quietest devices in any home ... (they don't include 'balancing weights' for noth'n) ... (although I do concede it takes some skill to do the job right, LOL) ...

Oh, BTY ... ... ... in today's 'digital word', our entire life's history is but a 'click' or two away ... ALL cell phone conversations and ALL 'internet' activity is recorded by our government now ... it's usually never needed unless they have reason to go back and look ... what bothers me is the fact that they can, at any time, do searches on our records using certain 'key words' and use the info to accuse anyone of about anything they wish ... (one reason I don't use 'facebook' ... it just provides 'easier' access to personal stuff) ...

Don't get me started on the vastly increased use of 'drones' to watch us in 'real time' ... they 'can' even determine which room of the house you're in if they wish ...

If I'm not mistaken...And I might be...I have no record. I should have one. But I believe what they are looking for are felonies....Which I don't think a DUI is. Don't most job applications ask if you've ever been convicted of a felony?

If the state never prosecuted the case then you have no record on those charges. It takes a conviction.

even if charges were dropped, the arrest could still be on your record. it would be wise to skip the police department and contact your local courthouse for further understanding on what happens in your state. ive gotten misinformation from police on such matters.

Thanks for the informative responses. I did some search on internet and was getting conflicting things and figured I would be talking to folks who either had been through it or had heard about others.
That fan story still "blows" my mind.
