Child, when do you think is the time to love somebody the most? When they done good and made things easy for everybody? Well then, you ain't through learning-because that ain't the time at all...when you starts measuring somebody, measure him right, child, measure him right. Make sure you done taken into account what hills and valleys he come through before he got to wherever he is.
Lorraine Hansberry, A Raisin in the Sun

I am watching A Raisin in the Sun while I am working....so it is off and on watching. I am so glad I was paying attention when this was said. I thought of not just myself, but all alcoholics. I know I have felt misunderstood, judged and well, just  "different" so much of the time, and mostly by people who are not alcoholic and don't know what it is like to be one of us and to have been through Hell and back. Recovery and the program of AA is helping and at least I am "back".

Blessings to all of you!!

BTY

Your post caused me to remember when I was early in recovery, I used to think I was cursed with this 'alcoholism' ... years later, I feel like it was really a 'blessing' in disguise ... by being alcoholic, I come to know the AA principles for life, a 'spiritual foundation' that truly made me whole, allowed me to enjoy life ... and it makes me feel somewhat sad for the non-alcoholics I know, especially when I do not see any spiritual conduct from them at all, and carrying all that daily 'baggage' around with them as many people do, feeling depressed and lonely ... So I thank God for having this disease, else I may never have come to know Him like I do today ...

I fully understand your post, Pappy.  Back before I worked the Steps, I viewed myself as "cursed" with a crippling illness, and wished I could be "normal".  After the Steps and a spiritual awakening, I knew I'd been blessed with something that brought me into a new relationship with God and humankind -- and gave me a happier life than I'd ever had.
