Pappy posted a picture of Timmy and Lassie on another posting. I haven't come across any Lassie shows in ages, and just now found one on Turner Classic Movies. "Hills of Home", 1948 with Edmund Gwenn, Donald Crisp, Janet Leigh (Gone With the Wind). I didn't realize Lassie was that old. It is about a Scottish Dr. who tries to cure Lassie's water phobia while caring for patients throughout the glen. (I didn't know dogs, in particular Lassie, had a fear of the water).
Anyway, since the board has been slow, I thought it would be alright to post this.
Thanks a lot, Phil...
I'm not old enough apparently to appreciate it....the darn thing was soooo boring and poor Lassie was being a bit rough handled and I just couldn't stand hearing her whimper, although I'm sure she was acting. (Oh, just remembered that I read somewhere Lassie was always a male dog they used). Anyway I changed the channel.
Lassie was just one of many old shows I remember watching as a kid ... of course we only had 3 TV stations and were thrilled to have a 'black .n white' picture ... my favorite shows were 'The Real McCoys', Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Rifleman, 'Have Gun, Will Travel', I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeanie, Gilligan's Island, Perry Mason, Lost in Space, The Twilight Zone, anything by Alfred Hitchcock, The Three Stooges, etc. ... ... ... Dad had to watch Red Skelton, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, etc. ,,,
and yes, putting 'aluminum foil' on the antenna helped reception ... oh man, I guess I AM old now ... how'd that happen ... ???

Hey you guys....I knew Lassie when she was just a pup! By the way, you forgot about Rin Tin Tin and Sky King. Oh yes....then there's Fury and My Friend Flicka. There's no end to this. LOL!
You're not as old as I am forgetful, Pappy, because you jogged my memory about the foil being used. I watched Lassie, too. I am not sure which I had the bigger crush on--Timmy or Lassie--as she/he was just so gorgeous and adorable! I also loved the westerns as my dad watched all the shows you mentioned. I wasn't really into the Rifleman as much, though, until I was on my own in the early '80's and watched it and I think that is because I had watched a couple of Clint Eastwood movies and he was so darn good looking and in those earlier shows I thought he looked almost too good looking to be "real". Wait, maybe that was Rawhide...anyway, whichever one it was with him in it, I liked. Also my dad watched Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Big Valley and it seems like there was at least one other western show which I watched with him. The sitcoms you mentioned I watched. Also Lost in Space (I had a crush on Will, I think was his name). I felt deprived when I was younger as we had a b/wht t.v. and no cable, when it became available. I wasn't able to watch shows like The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family like some of my friends were, until I was older. Oh, I had a big crush on David Cassidy, too. I was really preoccupied with being obsessed with t.v. stars I know now. Even Dick Van Dyke and Andy Griffith shows because DVD and Mary Tyler Moore reminded me of my mom and dad and Andy reminded me of my dad. I think they were probably my favorites because of that.
We also watched Ed Sullivan, Jack Benny, Bob Hope. (I didn't have a crush on any of those people
I didn't watch anything except Lassie from the ones you mentioned watching, Mike D. (Hey! Were you one of those kids with cable???) Like you said, there is no end to this because I could go on and on. I know my grades suffered because I loved watching too much t.v.
Those were really "The Good Ole Days" as most of the stuff on t.v. shows nowadays I cannot get into, especially so many of those reality shows. Anything goes and some things, in my opinion, don't need to be aired and shared. Ahhhh, but it is so nice taking a trip down memory lane and talking about them here. For some reason, it is comforting to remember those days, even if I did probably flunk a lot of tests because I was watching t.v. instead of studying.
Yep, you guys, this could go on forever, LOL ... Grandma used to watch 'As The World Turns', Peyton Place, and other daytime soaps ... I could never get into to those just like the 'reality shows' of today ... seems to me like a big waste of time with very little entertainment value ...
And you're right Mike & Phil, I watched those you listed also, can't believe I didn't mention them too ... also McHale's Navy, PT109, the really 'Big Sheeeow' with Ed Sullivan, as you mentioned, 'Mayberry, RFD' (later Andy Griffith show) with Opie, Goober, Aunt Bee, Otis, and of course Don Knotts as Barney ... which reminds me of 'The Ghost and Mr. Chicken' ... and the talking horse, Mr. Ed ... ... ... The Dating Game, The Price is Right, and there's one show my Dad had to watch where they played swing and dance music with those frick'n bubbles coming up from behind the orchestra, with a lot of accordion playing ??????? ... ... ... oh, what was the name of that show ??? ... He had some sisters that sang on it all the time ... oh me, can't pull the name out ... ... ...
You're right Mike, this list could go on and on and on ... ... ... ... wow, think I better have them start digging my 6' hole in the ground now, LOL ... ... ...

The bubbles show was The Lawrence Welk Show Pappy....And possibly you are thinking about the Andrew Sisters? I watched that, too, but only because that's what my parents were watching. I can never remember really wanting to watch it. What about The Reluctant Astronaut and the movie where Don Knotts turned into that cartoon fish? Had a silly name to it, it seems. I watched all the movies he did. Liked The Price is Right, Match Game, The Dating Game I believe was also a cable show I watched when we later got it.
Loved that Mr. Ed show with the talking horse. My mom didn't get much into soap operas until I was grown and I was watching General Hospital and All My Children and she got into those.
The Lawrence Welk Show had The Lennon Sisters. My folks always watched that show, so we kids did too. It was just what was on TV, so we watched it too. Who knows about "December Bride", "The Gale Storm Show", "Our Miss Brooks", "Have Gun Will Travel" (Paladin), and "Dobie Gillis"? The other day I saw "Wanted Dead or Alive", with a very young Steve McQueen. This is way too much fun....Mike D.
Thanks, Mike...I started to say the Mandrell Sisters but they were prob. in cribs during that time.
I have heard of The Gale Storm and Dobie Gillis shows. I don't remember watching them. Wasn't Bob Denver (Gilligan's Island) Dobie? The other shows I cannot believe I don't remember at all. Were they in the 50's or very early 60's??? I guess my folks didn't get them or watch them.
Lawrence Welk Show !!! ... ... ... OF COURSE... ... how could I not remember the name ??? ... I kept wanting to say 'Sing A-long with Mitch', but knew that wasn't it ... thank you BTY and Mike ... that was bugging me ever since this A.M. ... ... ...
and YES, we had to watch what our parents did cause there was only ONE TV ... ... ... my wife and I have 4 TVs ... 200 channels and not hardly a da*n thing to watch, LOL ... ... ... a big screen, High Definition, super duper picture and the darn thing even responds to your voice ... the frick'n TV is 'smarter' than I will ever be, LOL ... (we bought a 'smart' TV for Christmas ... no manual, just 'on screen' info which we've never read through ... we still barely know how to get it 'on' and to get a regular size picture, LOL ... we went 2 weeks watching it in regular definition 'til I accidently got on to a High Def channel ... that blew us away, it's so flippin' real ... ... ... then we had company over for dinner and the kids showed us how to get the right 'ratio' setting for the type picture ... oh wow, who knew ??? ... when I was a kid, we had to wait 3 or 4 minutes just for the picture to appear after turning the set 'on' ...)(you know, there were 'tubes' to warm up ... the transistor hadn't been invented yet, LOL) ...
You mentioned Steve McQueen Mike and that reminded me of an 'all time' favorite, 'The Great Escape' ... wasn't it Steve McQueen that did the 'motorcycle' scene jumping the fences ??? ... and I think I remember hearing he did those himself, no stuntman ...
Oh boy, now I'm going back to 'Spanky and Our Gang', and that kid that's now our President, LOL ... ... ... then I think of seeing Eddie Murphy portraying Buckwheat on Saturday Night Live, I think ... ... ... oh man, the baseball cards I put on the bicycle with clothes pins to make some sort of 'motor' sound ... and believe it or not, we did have a milkman deliver our milk ... in fact, dad had a 'windup' movie camera that used 8mm film in it ,,, he got up one morning to film me, age 4 or 5, coming out to get the milk off the small front porch ... all said and done, that's the day I dropped one of the glass milk bottles and it shattered, sending milk and glass a fly'n ... caught on film ... dad loved showing that to guests and relatives over the years ... he had to 'reverse' the film and show it running backwards, every time ... huh, no sound on 8mm film and everyone loved it ...
I gotta go take a nap now ... and trim my gray hair ... where's my 'prune juice' ??? ... ... ...

Sing Along With Mitch???? I dated a Mitch a long time ago and I did sing along with him while we were drunk. Probably not the same guy. Oh, I am still having withdrawals not being able to get up and turn a dial to change the channels. The remote we have is too hard for this mind to figure out. I want to throw it at the t.v. sometimes. I just don't understand why there needs to be so many buttons for that kind of thing. I was a young teen by the time I watched Our Gang shows...I do remember the SNL show with Eddie Murphy doing Buckwheat--how funny! And I would be sick about the baseball cards too, think one was a Mickey Mantle? Not even sure I spelled his name right and that was prob. before yours and my time. The milk story is so charming and I would have loved to see Lil' Pappy and The Milkman on t.v. Ha! My dad would have whipped my butt if I did that. Everytime one of us spilled a drink while we were eating, he would jump up and have a fit. You would have thought a bomb was dropped on our white with black speckled Formica table! Talk about crying over spilled milk.
