The 3 basic instincts of human beings: 1. Sex- for reproduction and continuation of the species. 2. Security- both emotional and material security- to earn money, construct shelter, and care for our family. 3. Social- to have fellowship with others and care and share and love one another. These 3 instincts are normal and God given. But when they create abnormal demands on others, they become sin and go outside of the God given parameters for healthy living. Therefore when we turn our will and our lives over to the care of God, what we actually asking for is divine intervention in our thinking and actions, so that they can be normal as God intended them to be. All anger,resentment and fear stem from these 3 basic instincts run by human will. Observe a person who has surrendered these 3 basic instincts to God.

I found that understanding the God-given purpose and function of my 3 basic instincts helped me to understand how to do an effective and enlightening written inventory at Step Four.
