Robert Holbrook Smith (August 8, 1879 - November 16, 1950), also known as Dr. Bob, was an American physician and surgeon who co-founded Alcoholics Anonymous with Bill Wilson, more commonly known as Bill W.

A great man died on this day 63 years ago. He gave his life to AA to help drunks like myself to live a new life. Let us not forget the sacrifice that was made for our recovery. Sometimes we are asked to make a little sacrifice for the fellowship, let us pray that we will do it with joy.

Can I serve AA like he did?

Can I be unselfish like he was?

Can I embrace the legacies of RECOVERY; UNITY; SERVICE like he did?

I like Dr. Bob...I think he sponsored over 5000 people...If I heard that right. He went as far as using "never fails" rather than "rarely" in the message he carried in his story.....This guy was pure AA gold. RIP friend.

From...The Doctor's Nightmare...

If you think you are an atheist, an agnostic, a skeptic, or have any other form of intellectual pride which keeps you from accepting what is in this book, I feel sorry for you. If you still think you are strong enough to beat the game alone, that is your affair. But if you really and truly want to quit drinking liquor for good and all, and sincerely feel that you must have some help, we know that we have an answer for you. It never fails, if you go about it with one half the zeal you have been in the habit of showing when you were getting another drink.
Your Heavenly Father will never let you down!

Dr. Bob was certainly a pioneer. I hope that legend continues.

I am a great admirer of Dr Bob and those like Clarence S who followed his example. My own sponsor was similarly selfless. They all set such a wonderful example of this program in action. I don't even come close to the standard they set.

God bless,
MikeH.
