Well - I can't say I haven't had a drop...

For the last monthish I have been taking iodine drops for low thyroid symptoms.  I started out with kelp - and at some point when I didn't notice a difference, I bought some pure anatomized drops.  I started out taking one drop per day - and gradually moved up to three drops this week.

At week 2 - with 2 drops - I noticed my husband was doing the old 'sniff' thing with long kisses.  LOLOLOLOLOL  Ahhhh the memories.

This week I added three drops to my glass of grape juice, and it smelled like alcohol really strong!!!

I decided that it must just be a similar smell - but after a few days I was thinking that something was up - or switched or whatever in my bottle.  So I (for the first time) finally looked at the ingredients - and sure enough - the other ingredient is grape alcohol!!!!!

I don't know what percent, or what this means really - but I dropped it back down to 1 drop last night because I wanted to ask you guys what you thought.

The stuff really helps me function through the day without falling asleep at 2pm, I don't have to drink so much coffee to survive, the mental - brain to mouth thing is getting much better, I feel happier and that I have a better attitude - my skin is better.  I think I need it... but do I?

My first reaction is one I apply to myself. If I have a medical condition that requires treatment I trust in a doctor that knows my history to diagnose the condition and prescribe the appropriate medication and then take the medication strictly as prescribed. I don't trust myself to take stuff that makes me "feel happier" because I have abused substances in the past.

From what I understand, low thyroid tends to be treated for life. That's a whole lot of drops.

This is a provocative subject as some of us are actually allergic to alcohol even in very small quantities. Other's may not be allergic but the smell or thought of ingesting a small amount of alcohol may be a trigger and make them obsess about it, possibly to relapse. Could cause thinking along the lines of "some may consider this a relapse, my sponsor might think so, might as well drink". Many of us fight thoughts of drinking from time to time and don't need any negative reinforcement. I don't fall into any of the above categories. I just don't think about drinking and haven't since 6 months sober. I don't recommend using, taking food supliments, eating deserts/food prepared with alcohol, or drinking non-alcoholic beer (which has a very small amount of alcohol in it, probably the same as real vanilla ice cream) but I have done most of the above. Very early on (3 months) I had a bad cold, it was winter, I was working outside, and I hadn't slept in a couple nights because of the symptoms. I looked the medicine cabinet and there was some nyquil. I took it as directed, threw the rest out, slept well, and didn't obsess about it. Not a good idea. I've drank a few NA beers, but didn't have one till I was 5 years sober. Didn't make feel strange, didn't obsess about it. For me it was no big deal. Not recommended because of the above reasons. I've had a few deserts (rum cake, tiramisu...) no affect, didn't obsess, not recommended. I do use Act mouthwash but It's the NA variety, same with cough syrup (since that one early nyquil encounter). I guess I just don't equate that with drinking, and drinking is not something that I think about or want to do. Maybe I'm unusually tolerant or maybe just not too smart, I'll let you decide
I like the saying "what keeps you sober might get me drunk". Pay attention to your mind and body, play it safe.

I don't mean this as a judgment on anyone else's decision, but for me the issue is black and white. I will not willfully ingest anything with alcohol in it. Not even a drop. There are always better choices, in my humble opinion.

You DO come up with some good ones don't you ??? ... LOL

Let's give this some thought, do you cook ? ... if the answer is yes, then may I ask if you ever use Vanilla extract or any other extract? ... if I'm not mistaken, most of that stuff has alcohol in it and you use what amounts to a few drops per recipe, usually ... ... ... no harm no foul, unless you start drinking the stuff ...

I'm with Vixen here, if your doctor has diagnosed a condition that requires this stuff to help you, then by all means take as he directs you too ... HOWEVER, ... if you are feeling anything like the 'CRAVING' kicking in, then go back to the doctor for an alternative ... only YOU can determine your risk here ...

I found vanilla extract at the health food store that comes in a glycerin base, not an alcohol one. I use it and can't tell the difference between it and my old brand. I also use a mouth wash that contains no alcohol. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I spoke with my sponsor tonight about it - luckily - she also has low thyroid function. She said there is a pill you can take. So I'll do that.

Alcohol is often used in some supplement by their engineers and manufacturers to assist absorbsion.  Alcohol is synergistic and can multiply the affect therefore power of other chemicals and medicines.  That is an old warning and a good one.  I also will not touch an alcohol assisted chemical for the same reasons stated here.  I am allergic.  I turn yellowish/green after a while.  Good thread.  (((hugs))) smile

Well - Bill Wilson's movie that came out last winter got me thinking about the imbalances in my body. It was he who was a big fan of getting people's b vitamins checked and levels up - and so when I did that and got on some b vitamins I felt SOOOOOOOOOOO much happier. The same goes for iodine. You feel sluggish and cranky and moody when you don't have good thyroid function. So it's not that I'm using this as a drug to make me "feel happy" I'm trying to take care of MIND - BODY - SOUL in all regards and restore things to proper function/level.

I take supplements also - I get one of those multi-pill packages formulated for men over 50. I definitely feel physically better - maybe it's just the placebo effect, but I don't think so. I went a few months without them, because I was being a cheapskate, but I felt slow and sluggish.

I think it makes a huge difference in how you feel when you get the right nutrients and medications your body needs. I am glad you found out there is a pill available, Tasha, and I hope you are allowing a doctor who knows your history to assist you in deciding the dosage and duration of treatment. We deserve the very best care we can get as our bodies heal and grow strong. :)
