I got sober despite myself and how I felt. The 12 steps worked despite how I felt about working them. The 1st time I rejected the first step I got drunk and my life became unmanageable, and so I walked back into AA and got sober immediately. I did not need a greater manifestation of a miracle than that. Those that rejected the steps got drunk and remain that way. One of them is the man that brought me to AA.
It was suggested to me to work the written program and not the verbal opinions of sober members. I did that and it still works. Dr Bob's summation of the program is good: Clean house; trust God; help others. It works if I work it.
My worst days are when God is working on my defects of character. Like a little child I will not let go, and like a loving Father He has got to remove them.
