Does anyone know the reasoning behind a business bringing in a rule, that if their workers whilst undergo alcohol and drug testing are found positive for alcohol they'll be immediately sacked but if they're found with heroin in their system they get 3 warnings plus counselling? Why is alcohol viewed as worse than heroin? To me they should all be sacked really. What's the gist?
Maybe it's ignorance about alcoholism. Perhaps they think the H user is an addict but the alcoholic choses to drink. Many of the misinformed think alcohlics drink because they have no will power. Like the others I believe both should be given an opportunity to recover and only be dismissed once that path has failed.
The job I just left after 34 years had policiies on both alcohol and illegal drugs. Either situation could be cause for dismissal if deemed the persons found with substance in their systems could be unsafe around others(forklift drivers, nodding in a work situation,dt's around machinery, obvious withdrawal symptoms or they could brought before the HR department and addiction counselling and treatment offered to individual with completion stipulations determined...I would find it unfair for one substance over another leading to dismissal, again depending on companies policies/ Again we know about whats" fair" situations.. I know early in my job)1979, it was found out by my job I had copped some herb off site and had personal use at home but seeing how their was no drug testing at that time it was just a lecture I had to endure. The agency actually held events and partys before the Dram SHOP LAWS were passed(all but 8 states I believe follow these laws) providing alcohol for employees and sending many twisted individuals into the public after such events.I agree with general consensus should be an opportunity to get treatment....

I know, I sponsor a guy who is in a local "DUI court program", the tests are so sensitive they can't even use the hand liquid sanitizers, he like to run, but he can't on test days because it messes up his urine for the test.

Yeppers Rob, I dont know how productive it all is....hmmmm......they, I imagine have little or no honest desire to stop drinking...and well, as a brilliant man once said, "To every action, there is an equal and opposite re- action".....I think if it were me....micro-managing me like that, would repulse me MORE, the idea of sobriety (I heard about a bracelet, that monitors their sleep...eyeww Big Brother CREEPY!)...the alcoholic/addicts find the MOST inventive ways to scoot under the radar.....God bless 'em, I do believe its a racket..but, I guess it keeps, the drunks outta jail....We do a sober holiday give-away to the half-way houses, and one year, our Santa...took a crow-bar to the breath analyzer, in his truck....yanked it outta the steering column!!! LOL Bad Santa! THANK GOD we GOT to get out, when we did!!!! Please, how to you put someones quote on your post?
