When I was sailing single handed out of Tahiti, exiting the picturesque seawall of Pappette, and the lush lagoon, I was thinking of Marlin Brando who made his presence felt and his home in Tahiti after making the 1962 version Mutiny on the Bounty. I was not thinking of him however as Fletcher Christian but Terry Malloy in On the Waterfront.:

To my mind one of the great movie dialogs of all time.. I know it by heart and when alone as in this case I would pretend, often recite both the parts.. then laugh and laugh

Charlie

: Look, kid, How much you weigh, son? When you weighed 168 pounds, you were beautiful. You could have been another Billy Conn. And that skunk we got you for a manager. He brought you along too fast.

Terry

: It wasnt him, Charlie, it was you. Remember that night in the Garden you came down to my dressing room and said, Kid, this aint your night, were going for the price on Wilson. You remember that? This aint your night. My night--I could have taken Wilson apart. So what happens he gets the title shot out doors in a ballpark. And what do I get? A one way ticket to palookaville. You was my brother, Charlie. You should have looked out for me a little bit. You should have taken care of me just a little bit so I wouldnt have them dives for the short end money.

Charlie

: Well, I had some bets down for ya. You saw some money.

Terry

: You dont understand! I could have had class, I could have been a contender. I could have been somebody. Instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it. It was you, Charlie

I had Terry along on the long voyage with me to Samoa.. You see when he had the spiritual awakening in the movie. I would envision myself as his sponsor.. He would tell me this stuff and I would say..

Terry stop your whining.. you were the one who took the dive.. If you could have taken Wilson apart it was your choice.. but you didnt . Hillary Clinton.. you know who she is Terry.. she said there are no do overs .. stop criticizing.. stop complaining. .and maybe you go down to the gym and help this guy .just like you wasa bum, just like you was Terry.. maybe now you can help him, hes good like you was at one time, maybe a shot for the title his name is Rocky. Thats how it works kid.. you gotta give it away to get it.
