Sounds like your county councillor doesn't want to get arrested for drunk driving ... I think this may be a matter that effects him and his friends more than anything else ...
Also Sounds like an alcoholic's 'rationalization' for another drink to me ...

OK I know I maybe shouldn't be judgemental about this and I know that AA has no opinion on outside issues but what I've just heard on teh radio beggars belief.
County Kerry in Ireland, has the same drink drive laws as the rest of the UK. However a county councillor has proposed that due to the isolated nature of some dwellings, due to the non existance of public transport and due to the high incidence of suicide aligned with social isolation, then residents of selected addresses should be exempted from drink driving legislation for the journey from their nearest pub to home, provided they drive slowly.

Hmmmmm.........interesting.........maybe they are opting for homicide (by car) over suicide? But jeepers! When I was a drunk, I attempted suicide on Wed.s and Sat.s.....lol...thanks for the food for thought!
Everything will work out in the end. I sometimes wonder if the driving laws really matter anyway. I never cared one way or the other after a certain number of drinks - and since I'm an alcoholic - there was no stopping before that number anyway. Maybe normal drinkers do pay close attention to it to avoid a drunk driving ticket - but I would guess they are also the type that would want to be safe on the road for themselves and others anyway - so the law being in place really doesn't make much difference for them either. So who is it helping? Probably just helps to build better roads and what not - but doesn't really change how safe we are on those roads. I don't know. God does. He'll figure it out.

I've often thought that without driving laws we'd probably get in a real mess. Things like you stop for the red light, you drive on the left (UK) overtake on the right, give way entering roundabouts and give way when a minor road joins a major road (hah, the horror of priorite a droit in france!)
So for safety and social order to prevail, I think there needs to be rules. I rely in part on others following the rules of the road, while at the same time assuming they won't. of course I must put my hand up here and admit I'm a habitual speeder........with rules though. I obey posted speed limits even if I cannot see the need for them, but when we get to the National Speed Limit applies sign (a white disc with a black diagonal stripe) I usually drive well in excess of the national speed limit - if conditions allow. (It's always referred to as the Go Like F*** sign among certain highly trained drivers and riders over here).
So drink drive laws? Well maybe you're right, the drink driver of our type would ignore them anyway. The majority of drivers would think twice and leave the car at home I'm sure........in the UK more people are caught vastly over the limit than just over the limit, people either are well under the limit or well past it generally (bit like the opposite of speeding, most people are just over rahter than well over)

Even though I am on my 3rd DWI.......I would have had many more or been dead by now without the laws. I did plan ahead and get hotel rooms or rides much of the time. Notice I didn't plan on not drinking....lol. That would have been unrealistic!

We're a bit different though. I couldn't have driven sober because I never was. Even at 8am in the morning I would be well over. Most other people don't have that.
The change in social acceptance has made at least as big a difference as the law, but once again that never made a difference to us - it was just one more thing to be ashamend of and to try and hide.
I heard Mose Yoder from Ohio, the first Amish person to join AA tell his story years ago.
He brought up the point of how he avoided DUI's for years. As long as he kept the horse sober, the buggy always made it home without incident.
So yeah, maybe allow driving a horse and buggy while under the infuence. Pets are also supposed to be mood elevators, so this would help with the isolation and suicide issue also

That kinda threw me off track too Rob ... LMAO ... But you need to know that George Jones, country music legend, did get a DUI driving his old John Deere tractor to get more liquor ... guess that's not the same as the horses, ... cause at least the horses have 'horse sense' right? ... they know the way home ... wow, I've never thought of that ... huh, if I ever get to drinking again, I'll have to become Amish I think ... LOL ... JUST KIDDING!!!

Actually Rob, I think you're right r.e. the George Jones publicity stunt ... ... ... but living in Nashville most my life, he WAS on the news a lot and a lot of it was due to his drinking escapades ...
Anyway, I was wrong, it was Vince Gill's 'Gimme One More Last Chance' ... that was what I was thinking about ... LOL:
