My husband and I went to our first potluck banquet last night, and there were husband & wife alanon/aa speakers.  They were very good and it was interesting and moving for both of us.

I noticed that the people who were there enjoying a bit to eat, were people really serious about recovery.  No newcomers.

I felt honored to be there at all, and especially to be there with my husband.

Pot Lucks are the best ... Our group has a dinner about every three months ... Chili cook-off in the Fall/Winter ... Something based around Ham in the Spring ... Fried Chicken in the Summer ... Etc. ...

I love 'eating meetings' ... sometimes photos are taken(with permission) and distributed around the group for sentimental reasons ... these are times for great 'fellowship' ... the 'feeling', I am with 'family' now is 'over-whelming' ... and the 'love' born out of these meetings is nothing short of being a miracle ... just imagine us all at our worst moments in our alcoholism? ... amazing how these 'diverse' groups of people can get together and share a common goal like we do ... Thank you Lord!!!

Tasha, it is a good feeling and something to be proud of too. I noticed at close to a year or so, people let their guards down with me and I was more like just one of the sober folks (the oldtimers). There is a reason for this and it's that they have now observed you are not about to go out, you are also serious in your recovery, and you have been sober long enough to share a similar frame of reference (having had a spiritual awakening and being sober long enough to look back on it with clarity). It's very good! Happy for you.

I loved my first potluck. It showed me that recovering alcoholics were capable of socializing and having a great time without booze. I used to think sober parties would be boring. It was quite the opposite. There was much laughter and banter that day and I think I had a smile on my face for a week. We are having an all day affair in May out in the country with great food and fellowship and I can't wait. :)
