Yup, its my turn for the flu post. I thought I could avoid it through sheer stubbornness and willpower! Hmmm.. Sounds familiar. The sweats, shakiness, body aches.. Feels like a hangover. I actually woke up feverish and soaked in sweat and had a half-awake fleeting moment of panic- did I drink last night?? This hit me yesterday, and all day I felt I was treating a hangover! I realize I don't know how to care for just the run of the mill flu! Many of my old hangover remedies mimic caring for the flu... But I had to google 'caring for flu symptoms' and casually (casually because im 36 and should know these things by now lol) ask some friends what helps them (medication free). How strange that I lived 2/3 of my life thus far either drunk or recovering from being drunk. So grateful that's not the case any longer:) It's no longer a way of life to feel like crap every day! Just for a few days this time- and also a strange feeling to feel ill but not feel as though I've done something to deserve it, or that I caused it. Who knew I'd be grateful to have the flu!

Get well soon Colleen, ...

At night, cut an onion in half and lay it on a dish beside your bed ... this draws the flu bacteria out of the air ... the less the bacteria are concentrated, the quicker you can recover from it ... Also, Dean taught me about another remedy that helped a lot ... get you a Netti pot at the drug store and some saline rinse ... use as directed to clean your sinuses ... also the use of zinc lozenges is a big help in knocking the bacteria out quickly ... (Dean's more than just a pretty face, he has knowledge too ... LOL) (it helped me a lot when I got it) ...

Hope you feel better soon ...

Pappy

Sorry you are ill, hope you are better soon. A friend of mine just told me about the onion thing a few days ago. I never knew they drew the bacteria out of the air, but that certainly is an inexpensive and harmless thing to do. I'm going to have to try that one myself . Re: Netti Pots. My son has ongoing problems with sinus infections. It seems whenever he gets a cold, he winds up with a sinus infection. Most of the are viral, and I'm not a real big fan of antibiotics unless they're absolutely necessary, so we always do the netti pot first. He absolutely hates it, and he cannot follow the directions I give him, so we do a modified version. But it works. He tolerates it, and usually he gets better without the use of antibiotics.

I think it is great that you are able to have the outlook you have on being struck with the flu. Seems those promises do come true.

((((Hugs)))) and feel better soon.

Thanks guys :) the neti pot is a bit of a strange experience, but I've used it in the past for a sinus infection and it does help a lot once you get over the grossness factor. Huh.. Here I'm thinking teas, soup, vitamins- RAW ONION?! Never heard this one but I'm gonna try it, pappy. Is that a 'down south' thing? I'm giving it a shot!

I tried the onion thing, and the smell was waaaaaaaaaaaay to strong for us to sleep... I'm going to have to try it again maybe with a different type of onion.

Get well soon : )

Dr. Oz had a show on today about the flu, he was supposed to post his suggestions to his website. One thing he suggested which I am going to go get is Elderberry tea. Apparently there have been studies that show that whatever is in it helps block the virus. And he also said that there is a flu bug, a stomach virus and whooping cough all colliding in a kind of bacterial/viral perfect(or imperfect) storm, which is one of the reasons so many are falling ill. And, unfortunately, the flu shot this year has been shown to be about 60% effective. Hopefully you can get out or maybe a friend can find you some elderberry tea. 4 - 6 cups a day. Rest well and feel better soon.

I turn into sorta a hypochondriac when I watch that show Dr. OZ lol.

Also, my amazon.com bill is about 2x as high, and I wonder if he isn't working for them (hehe). Never know : ) I have so many tea's and vitamins in my cupboard that it became very apparent how influential I am... but I suppose it's a really great thing that I'm so influential, or I might not have taken to this program! ROFL!

LOL! You guys are great :)! I feel a little sick just IMAGINING what a netti pot might be......I love your post! "Grateful for flu" :)! Yet another benefit of Alcoholics Anonymous! I remember still the first time I got sick, in sobriety....I just could not believe it either," How is it possible to be sick from something other than drinking?" One remedy that cannot hurt you, are hot hot HOT baths.....there is a theory that RAISING your body temp, in addition to the fever you already have can help....Fever is our bodies way of trying to cook out the germs, and a hot bath may help....ahhh but its oh so soothing to dab Vicks under the hot water tap too! Now this all may just be an "Old Wives Tale".....but heck! I'm an old wife! ;) Feel better soon! Blessings!

LOL Eli! Well I'm a "learning" wife - and I think I just kicked the flu that was coming on last night with that exact thing. I got out feeling better than when I went in - which was achy and thinking "oh no, it's my turn". This morning I woke up feeling pretty good!!! I think it worked!

Oh, Oh, Oh, ... ... ... One more thing Col ...

Rub Vick's Vapo-rub on the bottom of your feet before you jump into bed ... A lot of toxins in the body come out through your feet (guess that's why they sometimes smell bad ...) ... and the Vick's is supposed to help pull the toxins out ... (my wife does this when sick and she puts on clean socks over her feet too)

By the time you try all our remedies, you be so sick and tired of them your bound to feel better in some fashion ... ROFL ... They can be more of a pain in the A__ than the flu itself ... LOL
