Ok, so there's this coworker of mine who I DO NOT get along with- he's 22, arrogant, ignorant and sexist. He does not care for me, either. Last week, another coworker had asked me if I would be attending this years holiday party, and I was completely honest with her and my reservations about going to a booze fueled party. She tells me that this guy , that Ive gotten in blowouts with, said pretty much the same thing. Come to find out he got sober maybe 2 months before i did.. Then tells me a bit of his story... And it's similar to my own in many ways. Huh.. This explains a lot, and although I still don't like the kid, I now identify with, and understand him a whole lot more. Our holiday party was last night, and neither one of us attended. This morning at work, the guys are giving him a hard time, and razzing him for not drinking- making fun of him. I could see his discomfort as his face falls, and he can't find the words to defend himself partly due to his limited English. So, I spoke for him..and myself.. And other sober people who have to deal with the ignorance of others. As I was calmly, but firmly telling these guys to go F themselves ( though in a more colorful manner) I saw this kid smile at me. He still doesn't like me haha, but we are in this together regardless. And we don't have to like each other- we respect each other and the program we work, and fellowship we both belong to. Principles before personalities - my first 'real world' lesson in it.

Spot on Col .

I did not like many people when I first got sober.

In fact one bloke got 'right up my nose' , But I respected him .

One day he asked me why I did not help washng up th cups , after th meeting .

I replied . I leave that for the people that share "they got sober over the sink ,

washing the cups after the meeting" I would add . "I don't want to take they're sobriety

away from them" . He really used to give one poor bloke 'hell' . The 'poor bloke' got to

the end of his tether & was gonna punch his lights out . I got between them & got

'smarty' outside & told him a bit about 'poor bloke' , oh I never knew he had that hard

of a life . Yes sometimes , if we walked a mile in somebody elses shoes , some of us may

be a bit more humble . I also remember the cliche' .

"There are no Big shots in AA , one shot & we're ALL Shot"

Great story Col. Way to step up and be the adult in the room!

I don't think you will have many more probems with this guy, just a hunch.
