Today at work, we were having a going away party for a young colleague. Our secretary purchased cakes, one of which was a bisquit cake which was laced with rum. I took one bite then realised as another colleague said it. Stopped eating it straight away. I really feel annoyed and actually feel like reprimanding her at work next monday. I also feel sick and am so annoyed.

so sorry, dear.  at work one wouldn't think it would be a problem... but it is me who has the problem with alcohol, not my coworkers.  i have been known to discreetly sniff a drink or dessert before tasting.  i can smell the alcohol very easy these days, and sometimes it is just the vanilla!  i don't think anyone did it to upset you.  i know i appreciate someone telling me if there is alcohol in something if they know i don't want it.  if i let it be known i have an allergy to alcohol, most people remember that.  just let one person know and it will get around.  take care and let it go, no good reason to let it spoil your day or week.  big hugs, jj/sheila

I had a similar encounter today at my dentist's office. Not the whole cake thing, but just similar that's all. The hygienist asked me to rinse my mouth out after she was done cleaning. So when she poured some water into the cup I noticed that it started to foam up. So I asked her: Is there anything else in that cup besides water? Her reply: Yeah, just some Listerine. My first thought was alcohol all the way. So I said: Plain water please? She replied, okay push that button instead. I felt angry at first, but then I decided...it's not worth it. I just have to be extra careful next time, that's all. I just hope your next party has a better ending. Great recovery, though.

Yes, yiou may well be right, it could have been vanilla. In any case I did not continue to eat it and as you say I'm the one with the problem. Thank you for your response. I have had a bad time with eating out this week, so am a bit pissy. I got duck in a restaurant that was pickled with salt and had to drink about forty gallons of water after it. I guess my higher power is telling me to go on a diet!

Wait. You mean... Even if I use listerine to clean my mouth 2x a day after brushing my teeth... I'm relapsing??!??

Hey Neo, ...

Not unless you drink it or swallow it ... but it's a good idea to get a mouthwash that does not have alcohol in it ... just the alcohol in the mouth being swished around can trigger a craving ... enough so that you might swallow it ... It's nasty, it will damage your stomach in a short time, but ... I don't know if I should say this or not ... ... ... I hid a bottle of mouthwash in my office at work ... it'll get you high just like vodka ... but like I said, it destroys the stomach lining and the lower bowels, not to mention extremely hard on the liver ...

No dear, that's not what I mean. For some people -myself included- I find it better to rinse with a non-alcohol mouthwash, like Act alcohol free.  Why? Because I had a history of drinking just about anything, including mouthwash on occasion. That's how low the totem pole went for me. If you're comfortable with Listerine then it's your choice, but again, I choose not to. I hope this helps.

I learned it similar to Shiela..."remember it is your disease and allergy...hold on to your anonymity.  It's not all about you and no one's trying to make you relapse."  Suspicions...did I have a ton of those.  Like the others...today I ask questions and if I'm asked why I say, "I'm allergic".

I'd love to hear more of the MIP fellowship share on how they have responded to being offered alcohol in a party setting or professional setting.   It is good for learning.

(((hugs))) smile

Yeah, that did help mr. David... (I guess it would be similar to why a coke user gets caught up in mirrors or drivers licenses.)

and I respect Marie's decision. I have an aversion to "vodka sause" (like... The type Italians put on pasta) but most of the alcohol gets cooked out anyway.

Party or professional....No matter what the setting. If I arrive I have a cold bottle of water in hand. I don't let go of it till done and I get another. Nobody asks you if you want a drink....If you have one in your hand. Nothing wrong with "No Thanks" as Tasha said.

If offered alcohol I just reply either "no thanks" or "I don't drink." If the person is a friend and asks why, I will just tell the truth and say "If I drank 1 of those I would be stumbling around and passed out within a couple hours."
