 You are right.  Some of our behaviors don't serve us well.  True, the "self" needs a bit of tweaking but, no need to throw it out with the bath water.  If I had to guess, I'd say a loving God would want you to "accentuate the positive and...e-lim-a-nate the negative".

John Bradshaw calls it having a "parts party".  All those things we don't like about ourselves can't be resisted lest they persist!.  If they are accepted in a little "parts party" (our disowned parts; those things we don't like about ourselves that we usually see in others) then we can accept those traits and behaviors in ourselves that have not benefited us and thus...trust me...they lose their power.
