Inheriting Alcoholism

I was reading the chapter of the AA big book: A Vision For You and I noticed a really interesting part.  Somewhere in the chapter it was saying that suppose your drinking is inherited by 3 families.  It really got me thinking about how alcoholism is an inherited disease as well.  My entire family has been greatly affected by alcohol for generations and I can see people in my family who are beginning the road very early as I did.  I am wondering what the future could be for my family if I were to be sober?.  If I decide one day "Hey, Im gonna have kids" what would they do if dad wasnt drinking, and what would theyre children do if they grew up to be sober?, its a really interesting thing to think how your drinking can affect others lives in this way.

I had those same thoughts when my son was born. It was one of several signs indicating it was time to get serious about getting sober.

Yes, my son takes mostly after me. Even the same little nervous habits and perfectionism's. If my staying sober, finally helps break the cycle, it would be the most important reason I'm alive. (For me in my opinion).

Good thoughts... thanks for bringing it up!
Have a great day!

I also come from generations of alcoholics on both sides of my parents! They were able to quit with no help and growing up I never wanted to become an alcohol. Yet, here I am but I too will quit and put this stage behind me and hope and pray that my 2 girls never turn to alcohol or other substances to deal with daily life events!

when I got sober and realized my liver loves alcohol and found out about all the Alcohoism in both sides of my Family, I gave both of my Kids a CD of The Doctors Opinion by Joe and Charly. They didnt understand it but I told them you need to realize that just because you dont drink now doesnt mean you wont in the future. Lot's of alcolics start later in life. It's something that all family members should be made aware of, even if they dont understand it, it plants the seed of knowledge for the future.

Runs in my family too, my Mom has been sober though for many years. Her brother passed out on a tractor in the middle of winter in Canada and he froze to death. There goes the myth of it being antifreeze.

Oh my Marc... I feel bad for laughing at that story, because it's so very sad!
