would a fellow alcoholic have any experience of colonoscopy that they would care to share ?  they do it with a sedation during this procedure and recommend a long resting period afterward to recover from the sedation - usally back home for outpatient procedure.

Howdy Dirk. Went on a few search sites, to learn more about it, but have had no experience with it, whatsover.  Other types--yes-but not this one.

There are a lot of fellow AA s on here-so hopefully--there will be someone, to get back to you, about it.

You have a good day.

I had one about 2 years ago. The sedative was no big deal to a Alkie drug addict like me I didn't even feel it, all the laxatives you have to take the day before are a bitch gave me a case of the runs that burn my back door. As for the actual scoping was no problem, I had a video monitor so I could see what the doctor saw. You could feel it when they snaked it around the curve but no real disconfort. Afterwards the make you lay down for about 1/2 hour, the scope inflates your colon so that comes out. I ended up having a mild case of Coitious and it cleared up with a treatment of hydro cortizone enamas (not as bad as that sounds) Hope you have good insurance, I got billed by the dr. the hospital. and the lab. Good luck. Bob.

I had the procedure done a couple of times back in my drinking days.  They never could find anything wrong.  Except, of course, that they found my head up there.

Once I got that extracted, and quit drinking, the pains went away.

Actually, the first time I had it done was without sedative.  Kinda suspected that the buggers were trying to shove a live python where it shouldn't oughta be.  I also thought that nurse with the rubber gloves sitting at the end of the table should have at least offered to take me to dinner and a movie before getting that intimate.  I must admit, it probably couldn't compare with childbirth, but a coupla lamaz lessons before hand couldn'ta hurt. ("Breathe, breathe...bear down, bear down, bear down").  I shoulda suspected something when the nurse came in wearing a t-shirt that said "Pipe Fitters Union, Local 619".  A few times, the doctor wanted to snap a couple of pictures (probably the usual scrapbook shots, to reminisce later on about his holiday up me bum), so he asked me to stay still and hold my breath.  He apparently didn't noticed that I hadn't exhaled even once after they passed the 12 inch mark.

Honestly, though, that was a long time ago before they got wise, and started using a mild sedative.  The second time I had it done, I actually almost thought I had dreamed the whole thing.  It was quick and painless, and I came out feeling that my dignity was still intact.  As far as the waiting period goes, I walked into the hospital in the morning, and walked out that afternoon.  They made me bring someone else to drive me home, but only because they said that I might have some of the sedative still in my system.  I can also promise that the stuff didn't make me feel high, or crave more.

As Bob mentioned, the 24 hour flush you gotta do before hand, is probably the least pleasant  part of the whole procedure these days, and it isn't near as bad as having the "trots" accompanied by stomach flu.

All in all, it is a minor inconvenience these days, and well worth the peace of mind.

No worries Dirk, no worries.
