As my alcoholism got worse and worse my appetite diminished. I wanted to eat, and was not avoiding it just to drink, but nothing sounded good. It really was a chore to eat. I've only been sober for nine days now but my appetite is coming back in full force. This also happened about three weeks ago before I relapsed and went down the road for about ten days. Is this normal? Is this a good thing? It really feels nice to want to eat again but I just can't seem to get enough. Just curious what others have to say?
Returning to some sort of normal routine must feel good. Especially, when it comes to eating. You're body might be craving some real sustenance, so feed it well. Balance is key though, so don't over indulge...ever. Enjoy a nice steady diet of good food and AA. keep connected, my friend, and keep growing. You're worth saving...indeed.
~God bless~

Eating used to get in the way of my drinking, so I didn't eat. Now I am sober eating, cooking, dining with friends and family is one of the many pleasures I really enjoy. I even had a restaurant for a couple of years. Eating well is important to sobriety because lack of food and poor nutrition seems to have a very adverse effect on how the mind functions, especially for alcoholics. Every now and again I meet a newcomer who is spinning out emotionally. If God doesn't give me any wise words to help them, I will just take them home and make something nice for them to eat. It is amazing how often this perks them up. With a full tummy the world looks much better!
One of the things I could not do when I was drinking, was to enjoy a proper meal. My wife used to be so hurt when I came home drunk and did not eat the wonderful meal that she had painstakingly prepared. But that's alcoholism, it damages everything. Be assured that when you start recovering through the steps, you will not only enjoy a good meal, but also participate in preparing & serving others as well. God will balance everything for you. This has been my experience.
Sugar and processed foods, especially simple carbs, and too much animal protein, are dangerous for this alcoholic....balance, balance in all things. Eating Right to Live Sober is a book I used to get started on a healthier mind/body as a recovering-now recovered- alcoholic. Maintaining healthy nutrition is an essential piece of my relapse prevention daily action. Plus hydration & exercise. And all the other tools we must use, of course!! :)
I gained about 10lbs. after I got sober, alcohol really suppressed my appetite, plus I would "forget" to eat. I certainly feel a lot healthier now, though!
