Is it ok to count time in jail/prison in 'how long' a person's been clean?

A dear friend is celebrating 9 months sober & clean. She is not counting her few months in jail. I suggested (gently) that she does include that time, but she just smiles and shakes her head 'no.'

She just wants to count the time where she herself said 'no' to herself, not the time where she was forced to abstain.

Is there a general rule of thumb for this? Or does everyone do what their conscience dictates?

Thanks in advance. smile

We count our own time according to what our conscience dictates, there are no AA Police, for most of us it's the day of our last drink/drug, for others it is when they made a conscience decision to abstain, her decision is hers and hers alone
