After some thought and prayer, I have decided to go to my high school reunion (30+ years) and since I've never been to one before, I'm a little nervous. I am traveling in with friends, and they are social drinkers (they can take it or leave it) and there will probably be some drinking going on.
I've been around drinking during my sobriety (over 23 yrs sober) but not in this type situation. Anyhow, I have already met up with one of my friends from back in the day, and she is also in the program. I'm just a little nervous about this for some reason, so thought I'd post. Do any of you have any experience with going to your high school reunion in sobriety? I think my anxiety is due to never having been to one before (I didn't graduate, and just found out that it is not a requirement for our reunion.)
Any thoughts, big book page numbers to read, or whatever, just put it out there! Thanks! Teresa
I hope you go and enjoy and have some fun! I graduated in 78' and went to my 10 yr reunion when I was 4 years sober, I was convinced to go by some friends who came in from out of town for the affair.
I'm glad I went, funny I was just thinking about the event the other day and a few of the thinks that happened. I ran into one guy I used to party with, and he was pretty "lit-up", he said, "isn't it great that we are all together getting smashed like the old days", I just agreed and figured there wasn't any point in going into the details LOL. A lot of us noticed that the women seemed more aggressive than HS at that time, we figured they where entering into their "prime" :D.
I didn't go to the 20th and we didn't have a 30th.
It was just like a wedding or any other event, some people where smashed, most had a social drink or two and I'm sure some where sober.
You have a legit reason to be there, we don't get sober to become hermits. Just do what you would tell a sponcee, make sure your spirtual condition is right, have a exit plan and phone #'s.
I'm sure God put these friends and the event in your life for a reason...........fear of people will leave us.
Enjoy

I also would've been in the class of '78. I didn't qraduate (left in the last semister of hs). I attended the 20th and 30th. Had a qreat time. Most of the people weren't drinkinq and I don't recall anyone beinq drunk. qo and have qood time.
I haven't been to any of my high school reunions either and ignored numerous requests to do so, but I have been to many social functions where the drinks were flowing, without incident I might add. It was good to see old faces and enjoy other people's company which was well worth the trip; however, the drinks were flowing and some people (like you said) were going overboard but the urge to drink never crossed my mind. The program in action my friend; so enjoy the reunion, just without the drinking of course.
~God bless~

Thanks, all. I'm pretty sure I'm in a fair state of spiritual fitness, (no looking at my belly button for hours on end, but sufficient for a mere mortal....) I have made a connection with another friend of Bill W., who lives in the area and knows where the meetings are. Let's see, I have wonderful friends here on this board and above and beyond all forementioned, I have faith in the one God of this universe that can take care of this gal in all situations. Thanks again, to you all. I'm going to my reunion with the head held up (by the Grace of God and this program, I am a college graduate and some of those snots from High School never even left the same horrendous town. LOL (down ego, down....)
Very happy to report that my high school reunion was WONDERFUL!! I had a blast and enjoyed seeing some of my classmates I haven't seen in decades. Many of them were drinking, music from the mid to late 70's, dancing and all, but I had my bottled water and no one even cared. I had as much if not more fun that any of them had! Thank you all for being here and thanks to my God for being an awesome God who is big enough to help this alkie have one of the best two days I can remember ever having!
