February 18th is my town's next poetry slam...I'm thinking of entering this under "short prose".

Unity

While delivering the body of the host, the priest notices the shattered capillaries on the face of one of his flock. Gin-Blossoms, they used to call that particular tell-tale of the alcoholic. The priest warms in the moment and says to his self at least Im not as bad as HIM.

Gin-Blossoms enters the bar. He sees a woman sitting where shes been since noon. Waiting for him. Her hand goes into his thighs and her drinks go onto his tab. Shes Marinated Meat. Gin-Blossoms looks at Marinated Meat and says to his self at least Im not as bad as HER.

Marinated Meat wakes painfully, lost in her apartment. Her only viable spawn, at fifteen years, Jimmy makes damned fine meth. Awake for days, making mystical felt-tip petroglyphs on the walls. Hepatitis found him and now Jimmys liver is ****ed. Marinated Meat looks at her son and says to her self at least Im not as bad as HIM.

My name is Jimmy and Im an addict. Clean again, just for today. Grateful to be here and Ill pass. Thanks Jimmy A man with an ankle bracelet shifts on the metal folding chair and touches his collar. Hi. My name is Peter and Im an alcoholic. Jimmy SEES The Priest and says to his Friend Welcome, Peter. Keep coming back.

Sad story. Sounds familiar :( But, like many of our sad stories, it ends with hope.
