Something "pecked" out the foam around my window air conditioner in the dining room about a month ago. "It" or "they" had gnawed a hole the size of your fist through the plastic skirting on either side, and also through the black foam. I could not figure out for the life of me what could have doen that. But BOTH my dog and my cat frequently run to the dining room windows, cat growling and dog whimpering, as though they are "patrolling" something. I taped up the hole.
This morning a horrible growling noise woke me up. I thought it was my cat choking or something. I ran to the dining room, and lo and behold, about 4 of the FATTEST squirrels I have ever seen were climbing all over the outside part of the air conditioner!! They scale the brick building and apparently are hiding food or building a nest underneath the AC unit, where there is a space about 3 inches high beyond the window ledge.
I tapped the widow and hissed at them (with the help of my pets), and they looked right at me through the window, growling and hissing!!! They were PISSED OFF. A couple of them had torn up ears like they had been in fights. One of them had a bloody nose. EW!!!!
My dog looked right at them through the window, not 2 inches away, growling, and they looked right at her like it was nothing. My dog looks like a WOLF for crying out loud!!!!!!!
Does anybody know how to safely get rid of squirrels???? They are not the cute little buggers they seem like... they are like huge growling rats with claws and teeth!!! YIKES!!!!!

Kill them (poison) or remove their habitat, block it off, close it up, I prefer removing the habitat because I like watching them, I even feed them
I love squirrels I encounter them frequently but they are selfish savage little buggers when pushed, I was chasing one around a tree once, I lost sight of him and all the sudden heard him right above me, I looked up and he "tea bagged" me right on my nose and then ran away, I swear I saw him laugh at me as he ran off

Removing the AC would be such a major pain, as it took forever to get the window space built up, and there was even a metal tray made and installed to carry water away from the building because it was running down into the windowpane of the tenant below me.
Trap and release? Well, considering there are 4 giant oaks in the yard, FULL of squirrels....
I think I will have to try to fill in the gap. I don't know with what, because they chewed through the plastic skirting. These suckers are HUGE. And ferocious looking too! They reminded me of the mean rabbits in "Watership Down", ears all torn up and scarred, blood on their faces....
K..... I will see if there is anything I can put in the gap that will repel them away... like some chemical or something?
:-/

I'm staying out of this one as I use to have a couple of them that lived in my fron't yard who lived life on life's terms right along with me. I'd do the SPCA thingy if it got to that or put a metal facia around the AC unit to slow them down some. Other than that I'd use acceptance and work on "low drama" solutions. Google "pest control" .... use your program of acceptance and change. (((hugs)))
buy rubber snakes, squirrels are afraid of snakes. put them in their hole under the AC. (but it sounds like your squirrels may eat snakes for breakfast.....)
i would say use minced garlic, but then your AC would put out garlic smells when you use it. chunks of garlic will not work, but minced garlic will until it loses its potency
Use Rataway, it is nonpoisonous stops rats, squirrels, mice, raccoons, woodpeckers, dogs, puppy's, cats pigeons from nesting and chewing. this is who it said to contact.... i really don't know if it is still there. go to Rataway.com or ratawayman@aol.com

Hey Joni!! rats with sharp teeth!1 nice picture!!!.When i lived in my home before we sold it,each year we would get 'bats" just a couple..I got so good with the broom, they would call me babe ruth hitting another home run.My daughter would call from her room ,she was in 20"s say 'DAD there flying,I would say turn out the light ,when i come in,give me a chance to get broom, turn on light it will fly around room,i would bat it down(no pun intended)sometimes only one swing,,, and then take it outside and leave it in grass ,let nature decide if it would live or die...fortunately it was only a summer time thing and at most 2 per year.little like field mouse bodies but with wings out looked like RODAN!!!.wonder if new owners will get as good as I was !!!! :)

LOL.. we had bats too when I was a kid, Mike. One time we could NOT get one out fo the house, so my grandmother God bless her, called the Police!!!! LOL This cop had NO idea of what to do, we lived in a very small city....
So the cop took one of my grandmother's bedsheets, and "netted" the bat, which was scrambling around inside the sheet, and then he slammed it against the window sill, and blood spurted all over the sheet. How AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We were traumatized for YEARS, and I still am, now that I remember that!
ANYWAY.........................
Just now, I must have looked like a LOON hanging out one dining room window, and spreading black pepper with a large serving spoon around the other window and AC...... let's hope this works.

Please don't poison them! Poison stays in the system and all it would take is for your dog to take a taste of the dead squirrel and he could be seriously hurt or killed.

GG
Yeah I wasn't being serious, I was being "over the top" on purpose to make a point, I don't see Joni being able to kill small furries, do you?

I would NEVER use poison. There are tons of ways to remedy a problem without killing animals.
Thank you for that Joni. BB guns and poison??? Really? Most of the exterminators around my area use live traps. Maybe give one a call. Better yet, maybe someone in your meetings have some you can borrow.

Kinda depends what the risk is. The radio station I work at is situated on the edge of a meadow. Mice chew wires. Radio stations are made of wires. If I see a mouse, it's stomp first & ask questions later.
If it was me, I would have no problem snuffing a few squirells if it kept my self, cat & dog from getting bit. Rabies is just ONE of the nasties that city-squirells carry.
Landlord may also have opinions on what to do about rodent infiltration.
Tree Rats! My cat loves to chase them. Can't catch them yet though. Previous cat was good at killing wildlife. she once dragged a rabbit kitten into the house. Then let it go.

I'm with ya Rob. I've been a little on the sensitive side myself. For the record, I don't think your psycho. A little manic maybe, but not psycho. Kidding...I'm just kidding!
