Just checking in to see how ya'll are doing? I havent been on the computer since... Katrina arrived in our Great Country. I have been literally absorbed in the plight of our fellow man. What a disaster for those poor people.
Anyone who is by any-means feeling sorry for themselves....I would encourage them to just tune into their television sets. I was having my usual pity party when on Monday I started watching the news. What a wake up call!!!! I've been glued to my television ever since.
I will patiently wait for some of the material things in life I am waiting for. Thank God I have a roof over my head...food in my refrigerator...and air-conditioning to cool me off...I live in Lousiana and the temps. have been in the upper 90's with the heat index of 105-110. I could not imagine trying to survive the heat under normal circumstances. Some of the refugees have had no water, food, not to mention no communication with the outside world. Not knowing if there loved ones are alive or drowned to death in the filthy flood waters.
I was watching thinking....how many are alcholics? Probally not being able to cope with the stress .....without a drink in their hand. Hopefully some have been fortunate enough... to have at one point or another... been involved in AA. So they know that, their Higher Power will be there to help them.
So to you my friends in sobriety....We all need to say a prayer for those going thru this natural disaster.

Hi NancyJo. Yes. Have been watching it for a couple of days too. Theres no words that can describe it all. Devestation-death-lost souls. Sad stuff. Compassion, I guess is the word Im looking for. And Gratefulness--the other word.

Nancy Jo, You are so right! I feel guilty because my first thought was GOD I am glad it is them and not me. Boy is that selfish or what. On the other hand it is like that old saying, I Felt sad about not having any shoes until I saw a man without any feet. That sounds good But, I am selfish and self centered. I am an alcoholic what can I expect? I start thinking just how that man lost his feet. Was it because he didn't have any shoes? I start not feeling so blessed anymore.I want some shoes now!!!! LOL

Hi NancyJo, Hey it's great to have you back, I've missed you. You are close to the mess aren't you.
You know as I was sitting in my warm bath today, I had the same thought about how many of those people are alcoholics or drug addicts, how many are without there medication for mental illness,and people are wondering why some people are doing and acting strange.
I wondered how many of our fellow AA members are out there saying the Serenity Prayer, over and over, and thinking "One day at a time" and God I wish I could get to a meeting.
I am praying for them all, I'm grateful I don't have any family there, and I pray our country will rally as they should.
I too am thankful that I am several states away. I have parents in Mobile, who evacuated to my sister's in upstate Fl and returned home on Tuesday. They were blessed as there is NO damage to their home whatsoever. Had a few trees down and debris to clean up is all. Prayer is an awesome thing
I was watching Primtime tonight and my tears flowed at the devastion of it all. I feel for those folks. Now for the BUT........ WHY did ALL those people chose to stay? There was transportation provided for them to get out in plenty of time, along with shelter........ someone explain it to me. Did I miss something?
I'm happy to see my MIP family are all well and continue to have hearts of gold.
NJ, I'm glad you're OK girl. Don't feel guilty, just count your blessings honey.

To answer your question as to why so many did not leave New Orleans. There are many reasons for some. Some chose to ride out the storm for various reasons....thoughts that the hurricane wasn't the BIG ONE so many anticapated for years. The eldery simply didnt want to leave their homes and pets.... some stayed after their familes were safetly out of harms way ....so they could protect their property from looters.
Very simply many stayed because... the poorest of the poorest dont have vehicles or finances to leave the city.
Assuming the worst was over...the huricanne came thru....the levees broke and water came rushing into the city. This is when the nightmare began. No-one except some of the experts (who have been saying for years the levees need to be updated) ever expected the worst was about to happen. If it had not been for the levees ripping apart the city would not have filled up with water. By this time is was way too late!
I ...in no way claim to be an expert in all this. Watching the reports on TV have drawn me to my conclussions.

I guess I'd have to be in their shoes to really understand. (here comes that But again) However buses were lined up waiting to take those with no other way or money out of town. Nothing is more important than life.
As for the levees, it's common knowledge for the last 50 years or so that they would not withstand any more than a Catagory 3. Why haven't the officials in New Orleans taken care of this years ago?
It's a sad time for all. But I think if people (residents and govt officials alike) used their noggins it didn't have to become what it is..........
Just my thoughts.

For gov't, repair of leves etc.This country and state im in (NY) are a mess. This is only my opinion and as an alcoholic i better leave it to those more suitable to handle it. My mom is paying $10,000 a year property tax on a house that cost her $12,500 when she bought it.Something is wrong!!

I'M WORRYING ABOUT THE $15 DOLLARS IT COST ME IN GAS TO DRIVE TO A MEETING. ALCOHOLIC OR WHAT???

GammyRose, You know how strong a recovering alcoholic can be. I kind of think about some stuff that has happened to me or how I one day at a time got through my first bouts with my recovery. If an alcoholic can do that we can do anything. I hope some of our AA brothers and sisters find one another. God can do a lot of things. I am seeing all this on TV and it causes me to wonder if we are really prepared if there is a terrorist attack. Or do we just blindly believe what we are told. If Katrina is any example of responding quickly, I am afraid of what could happen.
