When our past is strewn with tragic and abusive experiences

Today's thought from Hazelden is:

I believe that every single event in life happens as an opportunity to choose love over fear.
--Oprah Winfrey

When our past is strewn with tragic and abusive experiences, it's not easy to recall events as opportunities to love. Yet today we are safe, and we have come to believe a Higher Power has been watching over us every moment. Through the principles of this program, we are learning to forgive and to trust that we will always be cared for.

We cannot change the past. What happened and how we responded helped carry us to this point in our journey. We can cultivate love, now, for the present. The people who care for us will support us. The experiences designed for our progress will come to us. Our Higher Power will never leave our side. We can be free of fear today, if that's our wish.

I will not fear the events in my life today. I am ready for them. They need my involvement.

I can find this very difficult sometimes. I have learnt it is the ONLY way for me to get some peace. I have to have compassion for my parents - they are not bad people - just damaged people - damaged by the environment they grew up in. I say that not as  an excuse but as a fact which helps me to deal with it .I simply say to my HP....OK God! You hand out the justice......(NOT that I believe in a punishing God!!!!biggrin)....You are the only One who can truly see the big picture. I can't and don't ...even when I think I do....I also don't have the energy.wink
For some reason my HP led me to the rooms of AA...stopping drinking was only the first in a long line of gifts.......

P.S. I guess it's easy to love the loveable - much harder to summon up love for the unloveable - I was VERY unloveable during my drinking for sure.ashamed

Truely, there are the sprirtually sick, and the solution in the BB is difficult for me, and I suspect lots of us.

"When a person offended, we said to ourselves "This is a sick man". How can I be helpful to him? God save me from being angry. Thy will be done."

"We asked God to show them the same tolerance, pity and patience that we would cheerfully grant a sick friend.""

So simple, and yet I find it soooo hard.
