I paid through the nose to fix my furnace this past winter and now my AC is out. Compressor needs replaced. It's hot outside, and gettin' hotter. The "old Brian" wants to come out and play . Maybe tomorrow, but certainly not today. It's not gonna happen.
So Sorry to hear that, at any Home Depot, they sell Bionaire Water Coolers, you fill them up with about 4 gallons of water, you have to have a room where you have windows on both the front and back of the room, then you put the rolling unit up against one open window, so that the cooler air can go across the room out the other window... I had a house once that had a very large AC only in the sunny side of the house, but I lived in an any area that got really really hot, so I would purchase one of those machines every year, put in the end of the house that did not get the AC, and I swear, I liked it better than the AC.....
Another thing for the future, as a Home Owner, I have always had a Policy with American Home Shield, I pay about 40 per month, and well worth every penny, I had a very large water heater that just blew this last year, I paid a one time only charge of 60....the rest was taken care of, well you know from what you just spent......
About two years ago, I made a dumb decision, I had a somewhat new fridge, so took that off to reduce the monthly fee, any you guessed it, one month later, it lost it power, a trip to Home Depot, and a Bill of over 900, with the extended warrenty, so as usual, I learned my lesson the Hard way....
I know many many people that have American Home Shield, they all swear by it...
Good Luck, and hope so much that you will look into the unit I mentioned. There are about 200 dollars and worth every penny.
We think we own our homes, but they really do own us, dont they??
Hugs, and THIS TOO SHALL PASS, Promise....

Reffner, get a second opinion, many times the AC techs either don't know how to fix something or they are dishonest (imagine that lol). I might be a easy fix.

Good advice, but that's sorta my line of work . Then again, maybe a second opinion is in order LMAO. I've figured a few things out so far. The fan motor is seized up...can't even turn it by hand, and there are a couple relays that let out their magic smoke when the unit (it's a split unit) tried to kick on the fan sometime in the middle of the night. I haven't found any leaks in any of the lines, so that's one thing I've got on my side. To be honest, I need a bigger unit for the size of my house, so maybe it's time to bite the bullet and get a new one. besides, I could always get the tax credit on it next season.
The wires might have burned because the unit was drawing too many amps? I had one that need a "starter booster" ? to amplify the juice a bit because the aging compressor was drawing more amps. It was cheap and it's been working for 2 years now.
EEks, been there. BUT in my case, a few years ago, we had a compressor at the house which was only 2 YEARS OLD, and a very long, thin piece of wire had somehow gotten down into the compressor and wound itself around the fan, burning the whole unit's motor out. So we had to replace a 2 year old compressor, with a brand new one. It was a very painful purchase to make, to say the least!! Lesson? Maintenance, covering it up in the winter, and checking checking checking for objects. That is what I learned in that very expensive lesson.
now.... let us know when you have replaced yours, and are enjoying the cool air once again. Tax credit? Even better....
Take care....

Oh happy day!!! $80.00 to fix it. Parts are on the way. The capacitor that controls the compressor fan motor burnt out so the fan wouldn't turn on, causing it to overheat and shut down. I could just replace the capacitor for $6.00, but for $80.00 I can get the cap, new motor (with 3 year warranty), and wiring harness. God comes through once again!!!
