Someone was showing me this software, and it only works on a "free" basis to other users of same.

I have heard of it, like in very remote foreign countries. you can buy a little camera at Target for 20 to 40 bucks.

Well I am so conservative, haha, maybe more of a scady cat when it comes to programs that seem too foreign.

And I thought this site would be a good "thermonator" cause if no one here ever uses it, that tells me a lot...

Hi

I have used it to talk to Military people overseas.

Some blog spots use it for calling in.

It does cost and you have to be a member of the group you want to listen or talk to.

I have used it to talk to comp to comp, it was free, it used to be free comp to phone but it changed, but for video/talk I just use msn

you need ...no, I have found for me, it's best if used with a decent headset with mic, like a good one from logitech, usb port, or you get reverb echo from hell and frequent issues

but it's just a matter what the other person has, most chat/IM programs offer webcam and voice, Skype works fine for that if that is what they have

we use it all the time. to call literally to the other side of the world (cannot get any further away from where we call) and it works OK
Also we use it on the mobile phone to call the otherside of the world, that is free also. (I think i have to pay for normal cellphone minutes, ive never checked cause i get so many minutes to use, but i dont pay for the toll call, so i call that free) that is calling someones phone, from my cellphone using skype.
I know someone who has a phone setup for making calls with it. I am not sure of all the details how to set those up.
But yeh its very popular for people who have family overseas.
My husbands family uses it with a webcam i think but the picture is choppy its still cool to have though isnt it, seeing the person at the same time.

I have quite a few friends that spend quite a bit of time traveling, thailand, vietnam, etc and they all use Skype on their laptops to call my phone, super cheap from overseas evidently

Yes, I LOVE Skype! It is a blast, and such a great way to carry on a conversation! One downside is that I personally have to make sure my hair is not sticking out all over the place before using the webcam.... LOL

P.S. I bought my old little webcam about 3 years ago at Walmart for $10. It worked fine! Now I have a computer monitor with a built in webcam and microphone. If you ever need to replace your monitor, they are reasonable now and a lot of them have webcams... just a thought in case you ever need a new monitor.
