I am at my grandmother's calling hours today, my sponsor had stated that she was going to go with me to pay her respects. We get there and I see tons of relatives (grandma had 12 kids, and just to give you some background, my mother died drunk, in the car with another drunk, the victim of an alcoholic car accident, when she was 29 and I was 4.)
Someone said, "here's Joni.... "and a lady stood in front of me with her mouth gaping open. Her name is Joan (Thats MY NAME too), and she has been a member of AA here for 20-something years and has long term sobriety. I have seen her a million times at meetings, sharing her experience, strength and hope. I have sat down and talked to her on numerous occasions over the years.
Neither of us realized it all these years we have seen eachother in AA (15 years?) that she was my mother's BEST FRIEND, and I was actually NAMED after her!!!!! She did not know that all this time, I was the Joan her friend Margaret had left behind when she died. This lady held me as a baby.
My sponsor knows this lady too. They hugged and we all cried. I could not believe it! Now I have a missing link I have never had before, and Joan and I will be sitting down together for coffee, and getting to know one another on a different level. She had seen my grandma's obituary, and decided that Margaret's daughter (me) would probably be there and she would get to finally meet her for the first time after all these years. But she had already met me in teh rooms of AA, and neither of us ever had a CLUE.
LOL There's AA for ya!! If it weren't for this program, I would still be looking for that "link". No one in my family will tell me the TRUTH about my mom, how her drinking problem was, did she ever get help, etc..... Now I have her childhood best friend and adult friend too, and can fill in the missing pieces I just can't get from a family that has turned my mother into a "non-human". Now I can get to know my mother.
No doubt she and grandma were up in heaven today, smiling at eachother, saying, "It's about time they realized who they were!!!!"
LOLOLOLOL
Great stuff!!!!

Wow! I'm glad for you Jonijoni. One of my childhood friends called me the other day and told me that a 23 year old woman and a small boy showed up to his house and explained to him that she was his daughter and the boy was his grandson. This is a guy who's been asking the "Why am I here" for the last 40 years. Now he knows.
God sure works in mysterious ways! I am so happy for you Joni after all you have been through it was time that you have some good in your life.
I am rooting for you!

(((((Joni2)))))...You deserved that spiritual awakening. Kinda gets into the middle of your filled up plate and kicks everything else on the floor huh? Marvelous for you... absolutely marvelous.
Beautiful! "No one in my family will tell me the TRUTH about my mom, how her drinking problem was, did she ever get help, etc..... That really jumped out at me. You'll get to know her from a MUTUAL friend! That's nothing short of a miracle.
