Contrary to popular myth, St. George did not slay any dragons and he wasn't an English Knight. He wasn't even English.
1707 years ago today a Roman soldier was executed by his tormentors before the walls of Nicomedia, after suffering terrible tortures. Tribunus Georgios was a Chrsitian who refused to give up his beliefs as demanded by the emporer of Rome.
St. George is also the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal and Russia as well as England. Generally believed to be a Palestinian, Georgios is also claimed by Beirut, Genoa, Gozo, Milan, Barcelona and Moscow.
Just thought you'd like to know.

St. Georgius has recieved an awful lot of credit. My favorite is St. Francis for the whole Doctor Doolittle bit.
Now Shakespeare's Birthday...THAT is worth a Holiday. A far sight better than St. Patrick's day. Isn't he the one who led all the drunks out of Boston?
