" Our liquor was but a symptom. So we had to get down to causes and conditions."  AA book pg 64.

When this truth finally dawned upon me, I was already a year sober. It took me another 2 years, to thoroughly and honestly face the facts about my life. My kind sponsor told me I had run out of time, and I was going to get "roaring drunk" shortly. So for the first time I put pen to paper, and did a searching and fearless inventory. I made an appointment to share with my sponsor. Real recovery began immediately. My wife was the first to notice a profound change in me and joined Alanon after 3years of me being sober. Thus began a new phase of my recovery. My family and I devoted ourselves to our new lifestyle and we have supported each other ever since. My son was 2, and my daughter 5, and they got involved as well. Over 21 years in recovery has built us into a strong family network. My kids minister to children in church. My wife and I are at meetings and sponsoring others.Take heart if you are new. It works if you work it.Removing the symptom [alcohol], did not deal with the underlying causes[my defects of character]. So began a life long journey, which I enjoy every moment of.
God Bless,
Gonee.

Yes it takes a while to realize we are not here because of the drinking.  We are here because of our thinking.  The drinking was only a symptom of my sickness called Alcoholism.  The steps are the medicine.

Larry,
--------------------------
In the beginning I went for my drinking. Today I go for my thinking.

I have a thing in my mind, if not addressed, will make me so miserable, so unhappy, so stressed out, that I HAVE to drink or go crazy

OR:

accept spiritual help

It's really that simple

PS I am not religious or Christian in the slightest, I had to redefine, or relearn, or actually learn what "spiritual" meant
