So, I work in radio...right. Our music director gets CD's ALL THE TIME sent to him by this, that & the other recording company from every artist under the sun. Some frankly...are crap. Others are very good but just don't fit our station's format.
All of them go into a pile on his desk that looks like miniature skyscrapers made out of fonts.

I was sitting at his desk waiting for the boss to get off the phone, when I saw the CD "CASH - American V: A Hundred Highways" and while I'm not a big Johnny Cash fan...I really like his later work when he crossed genres. I asked if I could have it, since anything from of it that the station wanted, has already been ripped into The System.
Boss said "sure".

"CASH - American V: A Hundred Highways" - Track 7: 'I Came To Believe'

I hung on every word and cried. John C. was one of Us.

"I Came To Believe"

I couldn't manage the problems I laid on myself
And it just made it worse when I laid them on somebody else
So I finally surrendered it all brought down in despair
I cried out for help and I felt a warm comforter there

[Chorus:]
And I came to believe in a power much higher than I
I came to believe that I needed help to get by
In childlike faith I gave in and gave him a try
And I came to believe in a power much higher than I

Nothing worked out when I handled it all on my own
And each time I failed it made me feel twice as alone
Then I cried, "Lord there must be a sure and easier way
For it just cannot be that a man should lose hope every day."

[Chorus]

Yes, I came to believe in a power much higher than I

The Johnny Cash movie was also very powerful. He actually understood the situation with us. I was a 5 year old when my parents played his records and my 5 year old knows Ring of Fire by heart.

While still drinking myself down into a pit of despair, I was at a site in Nottingham and went to a supermarket. I had enough cash for a sandwich and a coffe and a six pack. God knows why I bought a sandwich and this CD (Big, big Johnny Cash Fan.)

I sat and ate my sandwich and listened to the whole CD crying like a whipped puppy. For the next 3 months that one track was on permanent repeat.

Eventually I was beaten enough to think I maybe should do something about my drinking. I went to AA. I recoiled from God as from a flame, so to speak, but Johnny Cash kept reminding me.

I still cry when I hear this track and still cry when I try to sing or play it and that's OK by me. For a long time, Johnny Cash stood in as my Higher Power. Thanks chum.

I've listened to that song a couple of times and agree from being witness to his life that
John C came to understand and then believe.  He knew and knew that he knew in the
end.  I've been touched deeply by another member of the fellowship who wrote songs
like, "memories" and "the way we were"  and another member who wrote "yesterday
when I was young"...(the taste of life was sweet like rain upon my tongue, I laughed at
life as if it were a foolish game the way the evening breeze will tease a candle flame...")
I relate to that song note by note, word by word...I sang it best when drinking.

We don't regret the past or wish to close the door on it.

Good thread.  smile
