"I think that this particular General Service Conference holds promise and has been filled with progress -- because it has had trouble. And it has converted that trouble into an asset, into some growth, and into a great promise.
"A.A. was born out of trouble, one of the most serious kinds of trouble that can befall an individual, the trouble attendant upon this dark and fatal malady of alcoholism. Every single one of us approached A.A. in trouble, in impossible trouble, in hopeless trouble. And that is why we came.
"If this Conference was ruffled, if individuals were deeply disturbed -- I say, `This is fine.' What parliament, what republic, what democracy has not been disturbed? Friction of opposing viewpoints is the very modus operandi on which they proceed. Then what should we be afraid of?"
One of the great things a sponsor said to me early on, that helped me to understand the flawes in my logic and introduce concepts that were counter-intuitive, meaning the opposite of what you would otherwise believe. "You will discover that things that you once thought were your weaknesses are really your strengths, and what you believed to be your strengths are actually your weaknesses."
"Surrendering to Win" is an example of a concept that is counter-intuitive. Another is "When we think that We Know, we really Don't Know. And when we Know that we Don't Know, Then we Know!"
I went to excellent introductiory seminar giving by a group that was formally "Lifespring". The speaker drew a circle on a chalk board symbolizing All of the knowledge in the Universe. Everything that there is to know. He asked the audience "How much, in a percentage of Everything that there is to know, Does mankind currently know?." The audience came up with the answer that Mankind knew apox. 2% of all there was to know. So the Speaker drew a very small slice in the pie on the chalk board symbolizing 2% "That We Know that WE Know." Then he asked what percentage do we know that we don't know?" For example, he said that "He Knows, that He Doesn't Know, how to do brain surgery. And that mankind Knows that We Don't know exactly how electricity works or how the universe began. Once again the audience came up with a figure of 3% of All there is to be known, That mankind "Knows What they Don't Know" and the speaker drew another small piece of pie on his pie chart on the chalk board to indicate that. So together, in this discussion, he and the audience were in agreement that a total of 5% of All of the knowledge in the universe was either known or known that we did not know.
So then the speaker, by logical deduction, said that that leaves 95% of All of the Knowledge in the Universe falls under the catagory of things "That We Don't Know that We Don't Know". What's this got to do with sobriety, those of you who are still with me here might be saying? When you apply this belief to yourself, your disease, your life, your destiny, your perceptions of where you've been, where you are now, and where you're going, you can start to acquire the humility, willingness, open minded, and spirituality to disregard what you think that you know, in favor of learning what you don't know. It was through the realization of my clue-less-ness that I became humble enough to ask for help and direction from my sponsor, my group, and my Higher Power. My weakness became my strength.

That's beautiful & reassuring lol Thank you Dean & Jane & Life Spring & The Audience! lol My Mum used to call me 'Know All Knows Nothing' & my Foster Parents had a sign on their door that invited us teenagers to leave & 'fend for ourselves while we still knew everything'. I love that I don't know today. It's a wonderful relief to let go & aspire to be teachable today 1Day@aTime ~ Danielle x
