Hi everyone,

I am a member of Alanon and have been helped greatly in my recovery so far on this site. I'm hoping someone may be able to give me their opinion or some direction on a question thats been bugging me for a while.
|I am the oldest child in my family and in my opinion suffered a great deal because of this. My dad drinks and everyone my family was affected growing up. I know of quite a few people who are oldest children who drink heavily.
I read somewhere once that a lot of addicted drinkers are oldest children...can't find where I read it though. I was wondering if any one has any idea where I could find this information, or if you have any views on it.
This is only for my own growth, it would help make sense of some things for me.

Hi Annmarie,

Probably me but just a bit confused. Are you going to Alanon because your Dad is an alcoholic? I'm getting that sense and if so, very admirable on your part. I'm not big on stats but understand that although we can be genetically predisposed to alcoholism, this does not mean that we have to practice. I watch my 3 kids quite intently because of this. Do you drink alcoholicly? If not, there isn't any "curse" on you for being the oldest child. If you don't drink but feel you are an alcoholic, then I guess you are in the same boat as me. Hope I haven't confused the heck out of you!

Scott

Welcome to MIP, Annmarie. I'm an oldest child & drank heavily. Maybe I couldn't take the responsibility! I then became the youngest in a foster family in my teens. This didn't seem to make any difference to my alcoholism. I carried on regardless. Both my younger sisters have had a spiritual malady to a greater or lesser extent over the years. I am the one that had to stop drinking & I'm in A.A. now to keep on doing so 1Day@aTime

I am the middle child , only girl, and my younger brother is clean now 2 years where my older bother has his hand curled around a beer daily..is he alcoholic?? Cant answer for him...
My parents never drank or smoked and Im not sure where in the family tree the alkies came from...There really is no rhyme or reason for becoming alcoholic here.... But like Scott, I reinforce the dangers of drinking to my teens quite often!! Where I came to the point of "falling over the edge" could probably happen to anybody!!
