Hi everyone! This is my first post on this forum. Just thought I would introduce myself.

I am 26 and have been abusing alcohol for about 7 or 8 years. I decided to get help two weeks ago today and haven't drank since. After a course of Valium and plenty of recouperation, I feel a lot better and have started to channel my energy into excercising, reading, writing and playing music.

I have been tempted a few times but seem to be doing ok at the moment. I know I am still an infant in my recovery and harder tests will no doubt come. I must say though, feeling healthy and clear-headed for the first time in years is so liberating! Although it is still hard to imagine never drinking again.

Anyway, just thought I would say hi :)

Welcome Vinohrady!!  Glad you're here!!

You didn't say if you'd been to an A.A. meeting.  This is were I learned not to think of it as "never drinking again", but "Not drinking today".  I take my sobriety "One Day at A Time".

The meetings give me support I need to take each day as it comes.

Hope you'll come back and share often with us!!

Hi Vinohrady,

Welcome to MIP. This is a great board and adds a lot to my sobriety. For me, I need to get to lots of AA meetings and listen to what is being shared in the room. I couldn't stay sober without regular AA meetings.

An important thing for me to remember is that I am choosing not to drink only for today. We can do so many things just one day at a time that would seem so daunting if we had to do them for life.

Congrats on two weeks without a drink! That's great! And those feelings of being healthy and clear-headed are great and just get better.

Please keep posting and letting us know how things are going for you, won't you?

Take care,

Carol

Given time you'll find it hard to imagine ever going back to the way your life is when you drink. Trust me, gut wrenching guilt, shame and despair has a way of looking kinda crappy from afar :)
