Without giving too much confidentiality away, I work in the correctional system with juveniles on a substance abuse unit.  Most of them are not ready to surrender and do not see their substance abuse as a problem or what got them where they are.  Right now I have about 3 youths who, to varying degrees realize substance abuse was the main problem.  Only 1 of them is mature enough to independently recognize some of the principles of AA/NA.  He asked his parents to give him a big book and other literature and has come to me with the realization that his whole life is not going to work unless he stays sober.  I find that amazingly inspiring coming from a 17 year old.  Technically, they all come out with over 6 months dry.  This is the only youth who is achieving some sobriety.  Where I live there is an institution commission that takes meetings to jails and other places where alcoholics and addicts cannot get out to come to meetings.  You need 1 year sober time to get involved in that service.  It is linked to intergroup.
