Had our second meeting at our local jail. I'm telling you, if you ever thought about starting a meeting like this - quit thinking and start doing! It's worth it. I know many of these inmates will go back to their "old playmates and playgrounds" when they get released... but for the couple that might make it... it's worth it.
It is a truly spiritual experience. I'll share a part of it with you. The meeting was on the power and the spirituality of the 12 Steps. One inmate who has been around the program in the "free world" said he understood the 12 Steps but he struggled with a Higher Power. He spoke for quite awhile about his struggles.
A couple of people later, a young man spoke about it being his last chance and how he was really tring to grasp humility and honesty.
He kept talking and the one inmate who struggled with his Higher Power began smiling. At the end of the meeting, he thanked that other person for what he said and told us that, "His words hit home, I felt a touch, and the hair on the back of my neck stood up and tingled. For the first time in my life I felt His presence."
When he said that, I too, felt that Presence. That inmate was smiling and gave me a hug and thanked me for my help. "I can now accept my fate, knowing I'm not alone."
His fate? Three more days in the county jail and then two and a half years in the state pen.
Awesome stuff, both of you!! I used to help out and speak at the local detox on occasion.... must get back to that. SO important to remember where we came from, and where we will be GOING if we do not "get this" and appreciate it every single day. Thanks, guys.
