yes, it's about 20% alcohol. look for the "alcohol free" varieties of cough medicine. Plenty of them these days.
I used to have to get the "childrens" type.

I made the mistake of taking it once early in sobriety. I swear to God, I got up the next morning with a hangover, pounding headache at all. That's when I looked at the label, poured it down the drain, and never did that again!

"meds" of any kind are a no - no if you're taking them to get 'high' .... I personally have never been able to take Nyquil, gives me the shakes, but I also have no desire to trade one addiction for another!

There are so many products that have alcohol in them. I just learned that mento's, one of my favorite candies, has alcohol in them!!!

Helps to be a cautious consumer....also, Delsym cough syrup can be abused! Almost went crazy one night taking it...of course, if I hadn't drank the whole bottle it probably woudn't have threatened my sanity. :)

Mint: sugar, glucose syrup, hydrogenated coconut oil, gelatin, dextrin, natural flavor, corn starch, gum arabic.

I have used NyQuil when I had a severe flu or really bad cold and it never posed a problem for me at the time. I never used it unless I was truly sick as HELL, and running a fever, couldn't sleep, coughing my head off, achey, miserable... Other things like not going to meetings or praying or working the steps is what gets me.

But each alcoholic has the right to treat his or her body the way he or she needs to, based on good medical advice and common sense.

I have also heard some folks say "that getting a cold or not being able to sleep for a few nights never killed anybody, but alcohol has."

JoniJoni,

At 50 proof, most would say that Nyquil should not be taken by recovering alcoholics. There's plenty more effective cold remedies than nyquil these days that don't contain alcohol. Some times we have to "tough it out" for the sake of our sobriety. The drinking of "non alcoholic" malt beverages (beer) have less than 1/2 of 1% (which I guess could be expressed as less than 1 proof) is not recommended and frowned upon, and I've heard that vanilla ice cream has more alcohol then that. No one, but your sponsor will tell you how to run your program, and even those are suggestions.

I would say it depends on your motives. If you drank it because you where sick, or because you wanted a buzz. Do not get me wrong I would stay away from it, but as long as your motives where good I would not worry about it.

LMB, that might work for some, but for a good number of us it wouldn't. Being twice as strong as wine, once that warm feeling came over them, it would be like flipping a switch to ON. And those that didn't have a strong urge to drink could question their sobriety (or their sponsor might question it) triggering honesty issues and perhaps the idea that "if I've already relapsed on the nyquil, I might as well go out and get drunk, to make it worth picking up the white chip. One of my friends, in early sobriety drank nyquil just before his (and my) 2nd
anniv. and he never made it back. 17 years later he's pretty much of mess. Caveat emptor

Definitley won't work for me. very small amounts of alcohol trigger drinking thoughts and dreams. It confuses me until I find the source of alcohol.

Lots of alcohol related foods nowadays. I once dieted on carbsmart low carb candy bars. Besides not losing any weight eventually a large number of alcohols used for flavor and sweetening accumulated and I started going crazy. i recognized the crazies but couldn't pinpoint it. Went to a bunch of meetings and stayed sober but was really upset with the backward slide. Started looking real hard at those labels. Though I wasn't catching a bzz, I seemed to be eating those expensive bars almost addictively.

I quit those diet bars and returned to sanity. That stinks when you go crazy without a buzz. I can't handle even a little of the real stuff or even an accumulation of the altered stuff.

I have to watch even red wine vinegar if the quality is to high. The wine aromatics still can trigger my brain If I use it semi-regularly. I'm ok at a restaurant but if I buy a bottle for home use I eventually decide to leave it set. I could just chug Balsamic vinegar. :) Today I can drink a couple ounces and set it back down. I don't know about four though :)

Must be something wrong with me that I'm this sensitive to alcohol and even its byproducts but I live with this fact as best I can. I have to be super honest of whats going on inside my head and my body. In this way and haven't had to actually take a drink even when my environment was sneaking up on me.
