I know, for me, the holidays were painful, unsettling, and generally depressing for several years after I got sober.
Our tiny AA group here has been struggling the past couple of years. It's always been a tradition for them to host a New Year's Eve party, complete with finger foods, board games, cards, music, etc.
I can't recall a single New Year's Eve that I didn't have a blast celebrating sober with all my sober friends.
Due to a lack of participation and dwindling numbers in our small group, there is no party this year.
I'm going to rent a bunch of movies, buy snack food, and stay home and snuggle with my dogs!
I know how hard the holidays can be, especially New Year's Eve because that was always the granddaddy of drinking occasions for me for many years.
What are you going to do to stay sober this New Year's Eve?

A nice grilled t-bone steak dinner with my wife at a little place in our area. A BIG ol' glass of iced tea is my favorite accompaniment these days. Then home by 7pm to pop "Pirates of the Carribean:At World's End" (which we haven't seen yet!) into the DVD player.
We won't bother to stay up to count out the old year, but will celebrate the New Year the next morning feeling all fresh and hangover free, with our traditional New Year's brunch together--oriental omlette (prepared by me) and fresh tomato juice.
Hey Dan, glad you mentioned that movie because I'm putting it on my 'to rent' list!

Rented movies.....except for the Rose Bowl game......gotta watch Illinois. Weeee......go Illini!!!! Unless of course, if I have my little boy Thomas (grandson) then it will be a whole NEW ballgame. LOL Food.....got plenty of frozen leftovers to tide me over. This all will come, of course, after I get home from work. And that in itself will be a challenge since there will only be two of us to man the shop. Get to run the antiquated inkjet alone as the other guy will be running the presses. (Work for a Printing/Bulk Mailing Co.) Pray the blessed "tabber" co-operates!!! LOL
Hope everyone here has a SAFE and SOBER night enjoying whatever festivities they choose. May the New Year bestow upon everyone blessings! Wanda
Hi,I am going to a AA dance and New Years Eve party, U dont have to look for for something to do in the program to be in a safe place. And yepper, no hangover new years day!!!! Everyone have a safe and sober new years!!!!Wagon
Oh, what I wouldn't give for a clean and sober AA dance! I used to just love those, but of course, back then I could still dance without something being thrown out.
So, like alot of us, it'll be all about too much snacking, and I'll bring in the New Year (probably alone-Ron isn't a night person) with a lit candle and a prayer to release the old and welcome the lessons ahead. Sober. Maybe I'll call Phil at midnight my time ( 3 a.m. his time)--that should lighten up the night, LOL.
Got a bit of a lump of coal this holiday season---my Grandaughter, after all our struggles and paperwork and just dealing with the state, has decided that she wants to stay with her foster mother. The foster mom has offered to send her to a Christian school, and to help my G'daughter get into a local Baptist college. It's the first and only safe place my Tessa has ever been, and I understand her need to be there. And if she has recieved a true calling to be a missionary, as she shared with me, then I need (and she needs) me to support her in this. Out here in the woods, there is little to offer in the way of what she feels she needs. Nearest Baptist church is atleast an hour away. This time of year? Would be hard to get her there. So, I let her know we would be here for her, and she can still visit summers. Talk about letting go......... love wren
Stay off the road for one thing, especially around 12. I live near a umbrella group where they have 4 to 5 meeting a day 7 days a week so I'll hit a meeting or 2. Movie sounds good I've only watched world end once so far and I also have the latest Harry Potter movie. Bob.

Happy New Year, My Lovely Sober~Vibers!!! I spent the last few days down south in Lewes following my spiritual pursuits with my Subud brothers & sisters hence my absence. Lots of Latihan, food, dance & play & feeling gloriously youthful (or as young as I'm ever gonna be! ;) Had the most spiritually fulfilling time full of recovery principles on a grounding of Higher Power. Alcohol&smoke-free. Full of love. Thanks for all your support last year. May this year be the best yet. Yours as ever in fellowship, Danielle x

I'm hoping that, in the town I live in now, has an A.A. New Year's Speaker Meeting and Dance (I know they did last year, but I had a bad relapse). I hope they'll have one this year. I went 1 time, back when I lived in Phoenix (in 2003), it was a lot of fun!! And it kept me sober. When I'm sober, I have more fun....
