I know there have got to be some animal lovers here on this site, so I would like to hear about everyone's pets, how they enrich your sobriety, and what they tell you about yourself and your progress!!
My baby Scouty (my icon picture) is 10 months old, and she has taught me so much about myself and my recovery.
First of all, I had a cat that I had abandoned at one point in my drinking/using. She is still with me today, by the Grace of God, but she is a reminder of how selfish and messed up I was back then. She had a habit for a long time of watching as I left the house, sitting by the door looking very concerned, as though wondering if her next meal would be there in the coming days. Wondering if she was going to have to 'go it alone' ever again, or for good. The thing is, she was hurt by me and learned not to trust people. She was fine at first, but when I relapsed after several years and chased drugs and alcohol and spent time locked up with her being passed around while I was gone, she learnned to be very distrustful of people. She is much better now, but I have to face that I did some damage back then.
My new pup is incredible. In the way that she is so very calm at her age, she shows me that my life as a recovering individual is indeed a lot more simple and definitely lacking the chaos of before. My routine is very normal, and she has never shown any real "fears" as an animal who is solely dependent upon me for her every single need. My home is now quiet; and she is a very quiet dog. She never cries when I leave, because she has never experienced me not coming back. She does not chew things up or destroy anything, because she is not bored. Everything I have taught her has been done GENTLY and without trauma or excessive loudness. I spend time with her daily, because I CAN. I can leave behind my whirling and my crises long enough to focus on peace and caring and friendship, which I could never manage to do before. She does not bark incessantly, because she does not HAVE to do that to get my attention. She is a good girl, because she has a mother who is patient and healthier now becasue of AA.
Some of you may think me crazy for this topic, but ahhh... this dog and cat are the 'children' God saw fit for me to have right now, and they are a very blessed part of my sober life, my healing, and can be a gauge as to where I'm at emotionally due to their sensitivity and repetitiousness.
I would LOVE to hear about all of your Sobriety Pets!!!
Pickles eats my shoes. Shoot- at one time or another she eats just about everything that's laying around. I think she's part goat. She's not super-dooper bright but she's still a puppy. She is the master of escape and the neighborhood kids love her. I have another dog- ZsaZsa (my daughter has named all of my pets) and a cat named LauLau. I feel a little bad that I dont seem to have any pics of ZsaZsa- poor neglected pup. She's the senior dog around here and shaped a bit like a sausage with skinny legs and a tail. She's a good pup and lots of the time I let her sleep on a couch upstairs on the porch, because she is aprofessional beggar and looks pitiful begging to come in at the kitchen door.
Love my dogs. (The cat is a bit condescending and wouldn't ever stoop to posing for a picture. She claims I'm her pet.)
Used to torture my older sister a lot by telling her "The cat's in the toilet." She used to actually believe us. Poor girl. No wonder she locked me out of the house in my underwears and phoned up all the neighbor girls.
Oh, Bob, she's absolutely beautiful! I keep trying to get a pic on here, but can't figure out how to do it. She is really lovely, thank you for sharing her with us. Wren

TLH, what a beautiful face! Both pics look like she was caught at something, LOL. Now, I had a goat dairy for many years, and they really really don't eat all that stuff like the cartoons. They'll taste stuff--if theyre bored, they may even chew something for a bit, but nah, they won't swallow your shoes. I had a girl, Crazy Eights, that used to steal Scott towels when I wasn't watching, in the milk parlor. I'd go to grab it from her and she'd pull it in so far I'd have to put her in a head lock and try to get it out before she swallowed it. I think she thought it was a game. Had one goat where I actually had to layer her food--dry cob on the bottom, special goat food in the middle, a little wet cob on top, and her vitamins sprinkled over it all. Funny girl....Wren

Ok, if I did this right, Kaycee and Murphy, when he was still a pup, should be attached. He weights about 85#s now, if not more. His Daddy won Natl' Pulling competitions, Apache Joe, from ThunderValley Bulldogs. Murphys all muscle. Wren
