How do NHL odds work at sportsbooks?

I've been following the NHL for a few seasons and have finally decided to try making predictions, but I'm immediately confused by the odds. I see all these numbers with pluses and minuses, but I don't know what they mean. Could someone please explain them to me in simple, easy-to-understand terms?

Id also like to understand the difference between the various types of predictions, such as line, spread, and totals. Ive heard these terms before, but I dont know when to use each one. Is there a type of prediction thats better suited for beginners so they don't get overwhelmed right away? Im also curious if there are hockey-specific markets not found in other sports, such as those related to shootouts or overtime, where the outcome can change drastically, and if the odds take this into account.

Im a Maple Leafs fan. Last season, I started taking predictions seriously for the first time. Before that, I would just watch the games and yell at the TV. For the first month, I didnt understand anything and was just guessing. Then, I found a detailed article titled hockey odds explanation on the Sportzino blog. Everything was explained with examples. The line is the simplest: you just pick who will win. A minus sign before a number indicates the favorite, while a plus sign indicates the underdog. A total prediction is a prediction on the number of goals, and theres a nuance there: the 60-minute line doesnt include overtime or shootouts, which is very important in hockey. I started with the line on games where I knew both teams well. Which team do you follow?
