The above statement has been uttered at many a meeting. But are we alkies so abnormal ? Think about it for a sec. We're talking about a substance derived from rotted food, is used as a germicide, and, for the most part, flammable. Maybe our reaction to such a poisonous chemical could be classified what would NORMALLY happen? Just a thought.

In my experience I consider myself an abnormal drinker because in my 20 year drinking career there were many firm resolves and attempts at drinking responsibly that turned into a trainwreck every single time. I am an extremely irresponsible drinker and the behaviors that followed my binges make the word abnormal seem like a good thing.
I was a "normal" drinker until I went to college and learned the chemical aspect of my disease and matched it up to my acceptance of it and then my succumbing to or under the influence of it. Drinking a mind and mood altering chemical and expecting not to be altered was a dumb down for me and then I found out more that by continuing to drink it, overcoming the nasty taste and in spite of the altering resulted in the compulsion and the allergy to it. What may have been abnormal for me was that I grew a very large allergy to it resulting in a sick ability to drink way beyond reason, experience expected rage and anger events and turn jaundiced yellow. Alcohol is a anesthetic and kills feelings such as for me the urge to urinate. The urine was dispatched under my skin and the color did not return to normal until 5 years after I went alcohol free.
I had many professionals who worked together with me to solve the questions of why. One symptom of insanity has mostly left completely as has death. I experienced several toxic shock events over the drinking years and I have not had a mental relapse for a while. I like that last process. I haven't talked to a liquor bottle for years and too they also have not talked back to me.
I will accept the normal classification now ...thanks. Keep coming back and working it...all of it. (((hugs)))
I know I am an abnormal drinker. I have the ability to not drink too much if I choose to do so but I don't often choose to do so. I am very grateful for this site and for people who can understand me. The guilt for being a "bad" person has been awful. I have hidden it for so long it feels good to not have to hide it anymore.
Phoenix we are not "BAD" people...we are "SICK" people who need to get healthy; mind, body, spirit and emotions. Yes how we live is insane and hurtful to ourselves and others who love us and we often leave them with the thoughts and feelings that they are responsible for the insanity. That is why the other twelve step and tradition programs work and work as well as ours does. I hurt a lot of my "victims" who felt someway and how that they were responsible for my illness...they were not at all.
I often tell newcomers that they need not feel abnormal. College educated kids pay a lot of money to go to colleges to be taught things like "Advertising" and "Marketing", which are arts that fall somewhere between half truths and lies. They get hired by firms which pay a lot of money to initiate "campaigns" designed to convince people that they need their products. Alcohol is marketed as a substance which one needs to be cool, attractive, interesting, a dancer, a singer, an athlete, and fun. Not true at all, but we see how effective it is when we sit in a meeting and hear someone say they just wish they could be "normal" through the tears.
And my first question is always, "Who defined for you that drinking was normal?".
I agree. We don't need to fall for that nonsense any more!
This thread is officially pronounced dead by myself as it was written during the lost years of my sobriety. Since then, I ve committed to a new direction and will now leave A.A. when I stop breathing.
