Love being sober

Hi all.  Thanks for all the welcomes.  One of the things I love about AA is no matter where I am, I'm at home!

I just wanted to share a little bit about the fact that I love being sober today.  There was a time when I thought getting sober would be the end of everything - the end of fun!  But my life is so good right now, and it was so bad before I got sober, I can't help but love it.

I was just thinking the other day about how completely unemployable I was when active.  How I couldn't deal with my kids.  How I basically was a sponge in every relationship and on society in general, sucking the good out of everyone else.  It's good to be giving back now.  It's great being at the same job for many years (and still enjoying it).  And it's great enjoying my kids - and them pretty fond of me as well.  Cool stuff!

When I first came around, I was told to stick around, that it would be beyond my wildest dreams.  Of course at that time, my wildest dreams were the big house, fancy car, wealthy and handsome husband, perfectly behaved kids, etc...  Gotta tell you - that didn't happen.

What did happen is I found a contentment.  Contentment with my slightly dinged up Neon (with the Happy Meal corpses included), my typical teenagers, my okay job, my singleness, all of it.  And truly, contentment was not a part of my vocabulary.  More was my byword.  So truly, this is beyond my wildest dreams.

Life is good.  Not always easy, that's for sure.  But I used to live in a flat black and white miserable little world.  Today I get to live in 3D, technicolor.  While it's not always easy, it sure is richer!

Stick around. The miracles always happen!

Karen

I plan to stick around and I was just like you when I was active. Slowly I am learning it is ok to be me. And I too am really enjoying being sober - something I just could not imagine when I was drinking. Good to read your post.
