Occasionally people have said to me "all I have is this day" and it gave me the oddest feeling. I felt like questioning their freedom from both the past and the future. It means a lot to me knowing that today I got through without reaching for a drink or drug, losing my temper, being overly critical or trying to change someone. It takes help from some kind of Supreme Being for me to meet daily life's demands and so it's up to me to listen carefully enough until I can tell that I'm doing the right thing.
Maybe the next thing I'll do is make a decision on what it would take to turn things around and start out on a better path. What is it that I'm looking for? Acceptance of the ways things turned out.
This is one of the basics we learn in AA, ... we learn to live 'One Day at a Time' ... we strive to not take a drink, just for today ... and learn that that IS very doable ... then we go on to learn a new way to live and think ... and put what we learn into practice ...
You said "I felt like questioning their freedom from both the past and the future." ... In the AA program, we learn how to forgive others for wrongs done to us whether real or imagined, and we learn to forgive ourselves for things we did that were not right or selfish in nature ... we go to those we hurt and make amends ... we set things straight and start anew ... with that, we find a new freedom ...
With this new line of 'thinking' and action comes a satisfaction of knowing we're doing the right thing, thinking the right way ... and fear of the future starts to melt away ... we now concentrate on Today, cause that's all we've got ...
Alcohol takes away any choices we have to do good ... as soon as that poison hits our blood stream, then we lose all composure and stoop to our lowest human status possible ...
Go to meet'ns and learn how people just like you learned to be 'Happy', sober ... learn how to get that 'new lease on life' you seek ... learn to be happy .... 'One Day at a Time' ... ... ... If I can do it, then you can too ... like many of us here ...
Love ya and God Bless, Pappy
