Meeting attendance verified electronically
Permalink

I recently got a DUI and the court made me pay $8 for a phone application that verifies meeting attendance. All our local meetings are supposed to have a code that we scan, but one of the meetings I went to didn't have the code. Does anyone have any thoughts on how I can get credit for that meeting?

I've never heard of any kind of electronic attendance verification, only paper attendance slips that the court gives to people who got convicted of a DUI that you can get signed by the secretary at an AA meeting. AA doesn't have any kind of official involvement with the court system, and things like signing slips, either manually or electronically, are just done as a favor to the courts. Folks at an AA meeting aren't required to do anything with them. But regardless, if you need another signature, why not just go to an extra meeting?

This is crazy making.  Attempting to support them changing their laws regarding vending alcohol to known "problem/alcoholic" drinkers doesn't work...not even listened to.  Attempting to have manufacturing and distribution and sales educated and licensed regarding the mind and mood altering properties of the chemical and having the chemical managed thru the pharmacy section of the store and attempting to convince the DUI departments to allow AA to do DUI/education classes again are reduced to a meeting AP.  I'm bitching yes cause I've been around a long time and have signed thousands of papers of gals and fellows who were there just for that purpose.  In some instances that works thank God and in other instances it prolongs the death.  Alcohol production is up with the industry aiming to increase inventory by 100 percent while at the same time advertising is getting much more sinister.   Argggghhh!!! not a reason for me to go back out,  1st step.  Interferes , I believe with our/my  12 step service efforts.   Give me some feed back...having a reaction.   confuse

I know I do and have done lots of PI work/stuff which gets the program no where from that angle and while I get to still do it...I get to still be frustrated.  Thanks for the read.

Sorry Jerry, ... either your post is too cryptic for me to decipher, or is on some other subject ... I fail to see the significance of your post to 'electronic meeting attendance verification' ...

You okay??? ... been praying for your full recovery from your last hospital trip ...

love ya man and God Bless,
Pappy

The analog method is to get someone to sign off on a note saying that you attended the meeting date, time. I would
bet that your DUI admin. would accept this, as it was the previous method. Otherwise stick to the meetings with codes.

If you've been convicted of a DWI I don't think it would hurt you to attend an extra meeting. I go to one meeting that won't even sign court slips, at first I thought that was harsh, but after sticking around for >8 yrs, I can say I've never seen one person ever stay sober who was court ordered to be in an AA meeting.

Is a rant Pap...pardon me to you and the board...its a rant.  I know what it means and am one of a very few members of AA attempting to create change with sources that support the disease.    Done.   confuse

Okay, I'm go'n to have to reread this again when I ain't so tired ... but it looks like a critical statement about the court systems and those who have to 'put up with' getting verification of meeting attendance whether by paper slip or electronically??? ...

I guess those who are going through that find it a hassle ... and until a few years down the road, it'll be hard to find all meetings up-to-date with technology ... I don't think the court systems are trying to make it easy ... get a DUI/DWI ... they're go'n to make it as hard on you as they can, and rightfully so ...

And perhaps Jerry was saying that the courts might better serve the public by imposing more penalties on the manufacturers and suppliers ??? ... I would agree ...

A very confused Pappy, ... LOL ...

Exactly. Just like there should be stiff penalties against gun manufacturers and gun shops...

I have mixed feelings about the Courts forcing people to go to AA meetings. I have heard quite a few folks tell how that is how they ended up in the rooms and they have stayed sober since. Whether or not they would have eventually chosen to go to a meeting on their own is hard to say. I slipped through the cracks. I did get a DUI and had a second incident happen (not DUI) where I was arrested which was a result of my drinking. I was surprisingly not ordered to attend AA meetings either of these times. I finally chose to do it because I knew I had screwed up my life by letting alcohol control me and when I went to the meetings I had the desire to stop drinking and the First Step was in my head by the time I got there. I didn't want to be there....I knew I had to be there.

The scanning to verify attendance at meeting is new to me. I live in a large city and attend quite a few meetings and have never seen that. The $8 fee sounds like another way for them to make money to me. I guess they have to pay for the scanning technology though. I would contact the Courthouse and see what you do when a meeting doesn't use a scanner.

The courts are not the problem and penalizing never stopped me from a fifth.  Education and understanding is key on all those levels.  With education comes altered behavior  (recovery for this alcoholic) and altered behavior brings change.  It starts at the purchase.  Everyone should be I.D.ed and those like myself who have had lawful, legal, civil and familial problems because of my drinking need to have an I.D. which states "no sale" for alcohol. Of course there is no guarantee I won't be able to get it however who ever provides me shares in the violation.  All must I.D. and when it comes to me the statement is "no sale".

Manufacturing has stated that they will increase inventories of whiskey by 100 percent a few months back.  Sales makes the inventory most available and out in the open rather than in areas where a "mind and mood" altering chemical should be secured.  Advertising is dishonest and designed to increase use and the consequence of use.  Legislation locally ask the question "is the cost of enacting the change greater than the cost of the problem"?

I'm preaching to the choir I feel however I sing at this choir too and I've learned a great deal of compassion and empathy from it which I bring to new comers who  might not be suffering as bad if the entire alcohol community was on the level.   Mahalo  confuse

JF, what does "attempting to convince the DUI departments to allow AA to do DUI/education classes" mean?

What's that about? How does that work?

Here in Hawaii the DUI department has decided to honor the court which has ruled on one hearing of a DUI recipient that he cannot be forced to attend a group that teaches of the application of "God" in his recovery as it is a violation of his rights.   We who participate in AA are now not allowed in the education process as if God is the only thing we teach which it is not.  "Of our own understanding" ...or our self responsibility to chose and other options were taken from him.   I am going to check once again to find out how they are doing...we get some paper signers and more rehabbers which compensates.   confuse  It is left up to the fellowship (PI) to convince the DUI of our real value in supporting positive change.

Oh, you really mean AA meetings, not DUI/education classes by AA.

AA cannot do "DUI/education classes," whatever those are. They would be against AA Traditions and principles.
