I'm new to this forum. Please to meet everyone of you. I was one of those person who thought whenever you're dealing with problem alcohol will be a good source of escape. Until it became an habit and drove me to misery. But I met someone who gave me hope to change and save my life. She's a caring, loving and sweet girlfriend. I never thought that someone will still accept me despite of my mistake. She's an angel. I strive and fight the cravings I'm feeling. It was never easy for me, I feel like giving up too but I told myself I'm going to do this for this girl. Change is definitely worth-it, I'm sober. I'm happier.
Glad your here and that you find someone more important than yourself that makes you want to be a better person. Just a suggestion. Get sober for yourself not anyone else.

Welcome to the site Darryl. I have to be honest with you. I never had much luck doing this for someone else. I found for myself....That the only reason I've had any success this time....Is because I wanted this more than anything and I was willing to do anything to get it......Or it was going to kill me. Do you have a recovery plan that you are looking into?
welcome!!!
im in the same boat as stepchild. I tried getting sober for a person, fear, job, and on and on. it wasn't until I sincerely wanted to get sober for me and me alone, plus became willing to do whatever it took that results followed.
about 5 years before I got sober, I got into a relationship with a remarkable woman. she was the answer! shes the reason I needed to stop drinking!! that lasted about a week. started drinking again and very gradually was back to every day drunkenness. wouldn't ya know it the insanity train was back. I cant recall how many mornings woke up to one justifiably pissed off woman and how many times I said im sorry and how many promises I made to stop drinking, but it was enough to when them mornings happened and I said im sorry shed say,"yup, yer dam straight yer sorry." and when I promised shed say, "yeah, sure. whatever."
I drank her away, but that's what it took for me to stop drinking for me.
I really hope you can start saying to yourself that your doin it for you. keep saying it and eventually you will see you should do it for you. without you there wont be anything else.
Yes, I did it too. The first disagreement we had? I went out and got drunk. Living my life, relying on someone else for my happiness? Was not a good thing.
Even though there were so many others in my life who wanted me to have a new sober life, I had to want a new sober life for me....not for them. Getting sober for them didn't work for me.

I know, we realize things are important to us when we already let go of them. I'm just so happy that this girl gives me chance to prove to her that I can be a better person. I also thank myself because finally I had made the best decision in my life and i will never regret it. How are you and that girl?

I think we all do it for ourselves but getting an inspiration from others is such a big help.

As of now continuous meditation helps me keep fit and healthy.

I don't know much about you Darryl....Other than you fight cravings and you want to quit for your girl. Do you attend AA meetings?....Have you read the basic text of the book Alcoholics Anonymous?....Do you have a sponsor?.....Have you worked the 12 steps?
The reason I ask these questions is....That's the only solution that ever worked for me. All fighting it ever got me....Was my ass kicked. There is an easier softer way.....And the steps is it.
Welcome Darryl, glad to have you here with us! The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. That desire doesn't have to be ours. It can be someone else's desire to get us here. Could be a spouse, children, job, judge or new relationship. The important piece is what keeps us here. That's the key. I came into AA for my wife, kids and family. I'm grateful they got me here. The problem is they couldn't keep me here. It was only when I learned(the hard way) that I need to be here for ME, that any change in my thinking and lasting sobriety could take hold. Learning the hard way meant losing all the above and standing there wondering what the hell happened. Enough pain drove me to change my life for ME regardless of anything else. Sobriety first and foremost, then everything else.
Sobriety is a life changing journey. A design for living! A design that changes/improves US and our life so we don't have to go back to old solutions(drinking) that destroy us. A daily reprieve based on the maintenance of our Spiritual condition.
